Special Populations 504 plans are set in place for students who have mental or physical disabilities that may impact their ability to learn materials or complete daily tasks. It is essentially a model or plan of action for how the school will provide additional support for these students with disabilities. The school provides accommodation and specialized instruction to these students to cover all educational gaps they may face. Students on a 504 are protected against any discrimination they could potentially face. Students on a 504 are protected under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Section 504 is not a part of special education, since it falls under the Civil Rights Laws, which protects anyone with a disability against discrimination. However, these students still benefit from accommodations that assist in their learning. Students who qualify for a 504 plan can typically learn at the same pace as their Gen. Ed. Peers if they are provided with the appropriate accommodation. 504’s differs from IEPs in the sense that IEP’s are more complex with annual goals, the present levels, services, etc. While 504’s contains specific accommodation for the said students, that allows them to succeed in the gen ed setting. Accommodations under 504 vary depending on the disability, so say I have a student who has ADHD, accommodations that I would implement for a student who has a 504 is extended time on assignments, breaks during classes, preferential seating, and audio recordings of class lectures. English-language learners (ELLs) are students who cannot communicate English fluently, or appropriately receive information in English. They come from homes where English is not spoken. Many people mistake ELLs as having a learning, speech, or auditory disability, but they don’t, they have a language barrier. ELL students receive classroom and instruction accommodation and modifications in all subjects, not just in English class. While some ELLs receive special education services, most ELLs receive services under EL services, and need extra support to develop their language skills, as well as academic knowledge. Many ELLs receive pull-out services to ESL classes for extra assistance on their grade level content, but in a way that they can understand. Accommodations that I would provide for ELL students would be access to a bilingual dictionary, extended time on assignments, and visuals. Adaptations I would use in my instructions would be speaking slower and more clearly, adjust the pace of my instructions, and speak and write in ELL friendly terms. Dyslexia is considered a Specific Learning Disability in reading, per IDEA. Students with Dyslexia have difficulties in decoding when reading without making mistakes, as
well as comprehension, writing, and spelling. Not all students who are dyslexic require SPED services, as there are different levels of Dyslexia, they could qualify for 504 plans, so that they can access the general education curriculum the same as their peers. Accommodation and/or adaptations that I would provide for a student with Dyslexia would be audio/read aloud, speech-to-text dictation, reduced work, and extended time on all assignments.
