What is an English Learner? ( ELL) + An English Learner is someone who’s native language is not English. + Arizona also defines an English Learner (ELL) as a student who has trouble reading, writing, and comprehending English. These students usually need specified instruction in both the English language and in their academics. Students are given a home language survey which is then used to determine which student may or may not be an English learner.

Instructional Program Models + ESL + ESL stands for English As A Second Language. In this program, is offered to international students to not only learn English but to also improve their English Language skills. + Bilingual + Teaching students to use two languages + Sheltered English Instruction + This is a program that delivers grade level content instruction that is not only in English but it’s also easy for those learning to understand. + Structured English Immersion (SEI) + This program is a classroom where all the students have limited English proficiency which is determined by scores of an assessment called AZELLA

Arizona’s Language Development Approach + This approach is simply that ELL students are just as important and valued as other students in our community. It is our job as educators to make sure that these students are successful.
