Reading comprehension is a difficult task. According to Nation article “Children’s Reading
Difficulties, Language, and Relfections on the Simple View of Reading (2019)”, the Simple
View of Reading can be captured as the product of two sets of skills: decoding and linguistic
comprehension. It explains variance in reading comprehension and provides a good framework
to guide the classification of reading disorders. Nation used the term decoding to mean the ability
to identify words within the text and linguistic comprehension as the ability to understand the
spoken language. “Both decoding and linguistic comprehension are necessary for reading
comprehension and neither alone is sufficient (Nations, 2019).” The goal of teaching reading
comprehension is for the reader to restructure the words of the writer.
As educators we need to
assess how good children are at decoding and listening comprehension will help us determing
how good they are at reading comprehension. Students who are able to decipher words does not
guarantee that they will understand what they have just read. “The simple View assumes that
once written input is decoded, reading comprehension is achieved via exactly the same processes
used to understand spoken language (Nation, 2019).” If students are unable to process both, then
ultimately reading comprehension will fail, even if the student is able to decode perfectly.
The blog Reading Rockets written by Dr. Shanahan shares that the science of reading depends on
who you talk to. There is no definition that has been fully agreed upon. Throughout the blog, Dr.
Shanahan’s view of the science of reading is clear, it requires that teachers use rigorous
instructional evaluations to determine if there is a deficit. Students look for visual patterns when
they read and in order to read those patterns should be processed phonologically. The article and
this blog both share that decoding is a necessary part of the fundamentals of learning to read. A
true science of reading will include much more then just phonics, decoding, text reading fluency,
and phonemic awareness.
