CI 470- Fall 2023 English Berwyn North District 98 Multilingual Education Course is 50% English and 50% Spanish “To create biliterate individuals who demonstrate cross- cultural proficiency and have a positive appreciation for cultural diversity” K-8 th grade (district with the elementary departments) English Leaners- Spanish Speaking students Considering the students having 50% class in English and Spanish I would say the student body that speaks Spanish is more than 80% Does the district provide clear information to families on their bilingual education programs and models? The CPS webpage needs more information about bilingual education programs and the Berwyn district needs more clarification about their bilingual education programs. What program(s) and model(s) does this district follow? The CPS bilingual education program follows the English dual language program and the English learners program. The Berwyn bilingual education program follows the BN98 Dual Language Program. What are the language goals of the program? How does the district communicate these goals to students, families, teachers, and community? Both goals of both the districts their goals in their bilingual education programs are helping students become bilingual and biliterate individuals who demonstrate cross-cultural proficiency and have a positive appreciation for cultural diversity. What languages are used in the program(s) offered by this district? For Berwyn the main language is Spanish as it is the only language that shows up on the front of the webpage for their bilingual education programs. For CPS they only mention “home language” which can infer other languages other than Spanish.
