Final Reflection
The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on your learning in this course, describing how your ideas about DLLs in ECE settings have evolved: how it has been strengthened, challenged, or changed and what course experiences and course materials helped your thinking evolve. Using your L0: Initial Reaction Questionnaire video file, rewatch your video to find three portions of your video to ‘tag’. You want to ‘tag’ sections of your video that allow you to explain how your thinking has evolved: how it has been strengthed, challenged and changed. Evolution (strengthened, challenged or changed) Strengthened and changed Explain how your thinking has evolved: how you would answer the question today. Include what course experiences AND material(s) spurred your evolution: In my original answer to this question, I said the challenges ECE settings faced in supporting DLLs was the overall support in the classroom, like being able to have textbooks and materials necessary for DLLs. I also mentioned the teachers not knowing the children’s home language being a challenge. I have learned lots of ways in this class that have proven to me how DLLs can be supported, even if you don’t know the child’s home language. This information has strengthened my original thoughts. In the What Parents Have to Teach Us About Their Dual Language Children article, I learned about a strategy where a teacher might pair an English-dominant child at the water table or in the kitchen center with a child who speaks Spanish. This will allow the child who speaks Spanish to gain more experience with English (Michael-Luna, 2015). In the Creating Environments That Include Children’s Home Languages and Cultures article, it shares many tips you can do to the physical environment in an ECE setting to reflect and include the child’s home languages. You can create labels in the child’s home languages as well as English. You can use photographs, pictures, and graphics to support the labels, and you can bring materials from the child’s home cultures into the classroom ( Head Start/ECLKC , n .d. -a ). One of the things I had said in my original video was that if the teachers do not know the child’s home language, they are unable to help the child in their home language. This opinion has been changed throughout this course because it is untrue that teachers are unable to help a DLL if they don’t know their home language. As I mentioned above, you can add labels in the child’s home language, pictures and photos, and pair children with other DLLs. I also learned that you could learn 10-20 words
in the child’s home language and use them to help the child feel more comfortable. This will also help the child communicate their needs. You can also invite families into the classroom to use their languages, and incorporate the traditions, values, and practices of the child’s families ( Head Start/ECLKC , n .d. -b ). I would answer the question very similarly, by saying that the challenges ECE settings face in supporting DLLs is not having the right resources or materials to support them. Although, I would not say that the teachers need to know the child’s home language to support them, because there are many other ways the child can be supported. Include what course experiences AND material(s) spurred your evolution: I said that as a parent of a DLL, I would want supports/resources in the child’s home language. I would answer this question the same way, as I think it is important that the child have supports in their home language. For example, posters, signs, and labels in my children’s home language to demonstrate respect for the child’s home languages. These materials also help the children make connections between English and their home language, and it helps the child understand what is happening in the classroom. You could also bring materials from the child’s home into the classroom to help the children who are DLLs to feel more included in the classroom ( Head Start/ECLKC , n .d. ). ( Head Start/ECLKC , n .d. -b ). Everything that I have learned in this course has further strengthened my thoughts that DLL should have resources and supports in their home language. All
