Eliminating biased language is a goal that everyone should meet. Bias language is a language we
may use every day without even realizing it. Reducing bias is such a big deal because, most of the time, we don’t know it’s biased. Bias language that we’re trying to eliminate includes but is not limited to ethnicity, gender, race, and people with illnesses. This language is harmful and can negatively affect others. As stated by Ulrich (2005), “we need to see people as individuals first” (p. 9). An example where bias is evident in the classroom or school setting is racial/ethnic bias. It’s incredible how far we’ve come, but we still have a long way to go. Research has shown that teachers see misbehavior from black or brown students as more blameworthy than white students. When black or brown students are misbehaving, it’s often implied that they don’t care about school, but when a white student misbehaves, they’re having a rough day. Most of the time, the students show the same type of misbehavior, but the black or brown student is made an example. The inequities that some students face, unfortunately, begin very early. The outcome, some of the time, is stated by Levitt (2023). She states that “these inequities in treatment persist into adult life when it comes to treatment by police, the chance of getting a job or a promotion or
reaching the highest quality medical care” (p. 1). The most common bias in a school setting is racial/ethnic bias. Unfortunately, it’s a common thing, and as stated above, sometimes you don’t realize you’re being biased. I believe that as educators, there are many things we can do to reduce bias in the classroom and school setting. We can do this by being empathetic and building cultural competence. As educators, we should also practice self-reflection and self-awareness. Lastly, it is something that can help reduce bias. Lastly, hiring more teachers of color would make a drastic difference. Unfortunately, it’s not a task that we, as educators, can do. But it will make a difference.
