4 Topic: Syntax
DQ1:
Why is syntax instruction important for English language learners? What does explicit instruction of syntactic elements/features look like in the classroom? How might it look different in an early elementary context versus an upper elementary or middle school context? How does an ELL's English language proficiency factor into appropriate syntax instruction?
Hello, class, and Dr. Blige
I hope you are all doing well. I can’t believe we are halfway through the course! The syntax of a sentence refers to its order of words, so native English speakers should
be able to understand it. The rules of grammar can be followed in multiple ways, but many ELL students need a structured approach to learning simple sentences. Languages change their word order when translated directly from one to another. In Spanish, for instance, nouns are positioned before adjectives. By developing a natural tendency to use correct syntax in ELL, students can be reinforced early on. Those who learned their native language's grammar have more metalinguistic knowledge than others (Lubin, 2023). This looks different in elementary and middle school; the younger the students learn correct syntax, the better they will be able to achieve the 4 WIDA proficiency levels. The older the student is, the more difficult it is for them to learn the proper skills to read, write, and speak. References

DQ2: What is the relationship between syntax and grammar? Research grammar instruction for Grades K-8 ELLs. What are some strategies, activities, and best practices for teaching grammar to young ELLs? How do you prevent grammar instruction from being ineffective or uninteresting?
Words are arranged in sentences based on their syntax. Syntax is typically considered a subset of grammar. It describes how words are arranged and how sentences are structured within a natural language. The best way to teach grammar to young children (ages 6-9) is through play, singing, and the real-life application of grammar structures. They can’t process the abstract information of grammar yet. Grammar instruction focusing on form works well for older students because they can think abstractly (Leva, 2022). This can look like online games, worksheets, and hands-on centers. Like rearranging sentences or color-coding parts of a sentence. These activities can keep students engaged and motivated to learn grammar. References
