1 Corina Bajandas ECE-450 February 16, 2023 Kathleen Sherbon 1 st Grade Early Literacy Development 1. Phonological Awareness Standard- 1RF2: Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). Objective: 1a. Phonemic awareness - Students will be able to manipulate individual sounds of words. Students will learn to break spoken words up into constituent sounds to write out words properly (National Reading Panel, 2000). 1b. Word Awareness - Students will be able to isolate and identify individual words in a sentence. Activity: Small group- “Match the Rhyming Objects”. Students will first have a whole group lesson on rhyming and how it’s a step toward phonemic awareness. Students will listen to sounds within words and be able to break them down by identifying word parts. With this activity students will be given a laminated picture mat and picture flash cards that have rhyming sounds. Students will have to identify the pictures and match the pictures that rhyme. This activity is perfect for pairs or small groups and helps students develop phonemic awareness skills by recognizing rhyming words and the sounds within them. I will be able to assess the effectiveness of the lesson by doing one on one’s with students to determine their rhyming knowledge. 2. Phonics and Word Recognition Standard: 1RF3a: Know the letter-sound correspondences for common blends and consonant digraphs (e.g., sh, ch, th). Objective: 1a. Phonological awareness - Students will learn to work with sounds and word parts such as vowel patterns, blending, diagraphs etc. 2b. Decoding – Students will learn how to make use of their letter-sound relationships and understanding of letter patterns to pronounce words and recognizes sight words quickly (Reading Rockets.org, 2023). Activity: Small group- “Diagraph Clip Wheels”. Students will be given laminated circle wheels that will have a specific diagraph like “Sh, ch, th” in the center. Students will be give clothespins and will have to match the pictures to the sound, (Ex: Sh- Shark, ship etc). Students will learn two letter combos that correspond to one sound (phoneme). I will assess the effectiveness of this small group game by using a checklist type work sheet to indicate if they are able to read the given consonant diagraphs.
2 3. Rationale: Intentional literacy instruction is so important during early childhood, children need to develop certain skills that build a foundation for reading and writing. Knowledge of letters, sounds and how they work together to form spoken language and words are essential (Reading Rockets.org, 2023) . Educators have to provide intentional, high-quality opportunities that expose children to the world of reading and writing through language and words. I choose two 1 st grade literacy activities with literacy objectives that can be implemented in small groups and modified to meet the needs of all learners. There are 4 aspects of reading that 1 st graders will continue to work on that are essential such as; oral language development, print awareness, fluency (reading out loud) and independent wide reading (Chard & Osborn, 2022). The goal is to have all learners develop a confidence in reading by understanding what they read. For this less One way the “Matching Rhyming Objects” can be modified is by having less choices and sticking to one rhyming sound with just two pictures instead (Chard & Osborn, 2022). Another way it can be modified is by using actual objects instead of just the printed pictures. This gives students a more hands-on visual approach that may be more conducive to their learning style. The phonic activity I choose “Diagraph Clip Wheels” can also be modified to meet the diverse needs of all learners. I can have students white the letters while saying the letter names and sounds (Stanberry & Swanson 2018). Students can do this orally and practice blending sounds to learn the English language on their level. Teaching letter patterns is a great way to build systematic progression that will help students with reading and writing in the future. My job as an educator is to provide multiple means of representations that teach fundamental life skills such as reading and writing. Its important to remember that not all students learn the same which is why assessments are essential within instruction. I hope to implement these activities in my own classroom one day while following state standards and expectations.
