Rationale Cerca / Close ( By Juan Felipe Herrera And Illustrated by Blanca Gómez) Cerca/ Close is a children’s book filled with bright, fun, and descriptive illustrations fit for children under the preschool age. It explores a child's house while describing things and people that may be near or far as they explore various segments of the child’s home. The book presents a simplistic, expository, and descriptive narrative in a familiar setting, which the preschool children could easily relate to for better learning absorption. Using simple sentence structures and easily identifiable words allows for phonological awareness and incorporation. Visual aids enhance the learning experience and foster language development due to the visual correlation of different objects, materials, people, and the like. The simple spatial exploration through its central concept of close and far will improve language usage under distance description (Dickinson et al., 2012). The book also incorporates primary Spanish usage as an alternative text, allowing for essential Spanish learning, primarily through written format. An instructor may create group reading sessions allowing basic spoken Spanish emulation. The Spanish and
English used are relatively basic and provide direct equivalence, allowing the children to connect English and Spanish word translations (Chen, 2016). Nosotros Means Us ( By Paloma Valdivia) Nosotros Means Us: A Bilingual Story presents a bilingual composition that explores the solid bond between parent and child through creative and beautiful illustrations. Appropriate for preschool children due to its simplistic nature and presentation of various terms relating to parental bonds and equivalence. It also explores different animals and their young through Spanish-English texts. The book presents parent-child constructs, which may elicit relatability and empathic emotions, boosting interest and learning. The book primarily explores vocabulary under different circumstances involving a parent and their offspring. The book shows what we call parents and their children under animal pretense. The visual aids, repeating format, and descriptive approach allow language development (Dickinson et al., 2012). The book also predominantly uses Spanish and English side-by-side. It presents a simplistic structure of Spanish and English that may become translated through one-to-
one equivalence. The children can simply trace and connect the Spanish word with its English equivalent. The repeating format allows for better Spanish-English internalization and translation, especially considering the varying vocabularies used to describe parents and children (Chen, 2016) Vocabulary Sticks . These simple materials are made using popsicle sticks and any writing materials, though markers are preferred. Different words and phrases may be written on the sticks, with one side pertaining to its English designation and the other having its Spanish equivalence. They will act akin to flashcards. When pulled upon a container, the children must view the front-facing side and give its equivalent in Spanish or English, depending on the face seen. Upon pulling, the children may describe or perform actions related to the phrases or words. This material will allow for the memorization of varying vocabulary words and phrases. The simple setup allows for modifications, creating possible weekly themes or increased
