ASL 114 27 November 2023 What is a community in the Deaf and Hearing world? A community can be explained as a group of individuals who share the same location, goals or common interests and come together to form social connections and support collaborative behaviors. It is a spirited structure that encourages a sense of belonging, collaboration, and mutual support among its participants. Communities can take on copious forms, fluctuating from small to large communities and cities, also can be based on shared cultural, religious, or professional connections. They provide the platform to interact, come together and add to the collective, creating a sense of shared responsibility. The deaf and hearing both have remarkable communities, with their own normalities, languages, traditions and values. However, there are significant differences between hearing and deaf people like the way they are viewed in society, communication and education. The hearing community involves a group of individuals who have the capability to hear and communicate using spoken language as their primary method of communication. The people of this community rely on their auditory senses to understand and engage with the world around them. Spoken language such as English, or any other language, is typically used to communicate by the community members and they also use technology to enhance their use of language, such as phones or other audio devices. This community sets the standard for communication practices and normalities and plays a key role because it forms the majority of the population. It is crucial to recognize and respect the variety of communication preferences and needs within the larger community, including members of the deaf or hard of hearing community to encourage all-
embracing and equal access to opportunities and information for all individuals. The deaf community is a lively and diverse group of people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They share experiences of navigating through society not relying on auditory senses for communication. For a primary mode of communication, members of the deaf community use American Sign Language. ASL is a passionate, rich and visual language that includes hand gestures, body movements and facial expressions.(Padden & Humphries, 2003) The community has embraced a strong sense of identity and pride in their deafness as a difference, as opposed to being a disability. The deaf community stands for equal access to employment, education and other opportunities to advocate for the usage of sign language and other arrangements to guarantee effective communication. There are different sign languages and it is key to respect and acknowledge the diversity among the community. When people who do not speak English come in contact with deaf individuals, they do not feel different because ASL users gesture with them.( Hearing Deaf ) In the video, Hiring Deaf, two deaf business owners spoke on the limited number of employers willing to hire people based on their deafness. 70% of deaf people are unemployed or underemployed and it is because people view their deafness as an inability to do work instead of them not having the ability to hear.( Eyes On The Road ) Deaf people have and enjoy hobbies just like the hearing and they aspire to own businesses that promote inclusivity. There are not many restaurants that are run and operated by the deaf or hard of hearing. There is no one location where deaf people are in the world, and it is important for them to see businesses that are accommodating or willing to hire deaf people. It is important to respect and recognize the deaf community as a whole in order to encourage inclusivity and create a society that appreciates and supports all individuals.
