T6D1 What does it mean to be a culturally responsive teacher? How will you incorporate this into your future classroom? Culturally responsive teaching connects student’s cultures, languages, and life experiences to with what is learned and taught in the classroom; by valuing the assets of all students and families (Understood, 2023). A teacher who is culturally responsive can identify each students’ assets and use them to enhance student- centered instruction that matches each child’s individual needs. Educators who implement a culturally responsive classroom environment, commit to learning their students academically, socially, and emotionally. They also build on the life experiences of their students, create a supportive, accepting, and encouraging learning community, and increase academic standards and expectations (Culturally Responsive Teaching — National Equity Project, n.d.). Culturally responsive teaching strengthens students’ sense of identity, promotes equity and inclusivity, engages students in the course material and learning process, and supports critical thinking (Burnham, 2020). I will incorporate culturally responsive teaching into my classroom by identifying student’s skills. I would work to identify each students’ individual strengths, talents, and skills (Understood, 2023a). Discovering student’s interests can be done through simple conversations, student, and family surveys, and paying attention to student engagement. Acknowledging students background knowledge, incorporating their cultures, accomplishments and contributions can help to build trust as well. I can also be diverse when teaching and utilizing materials, using relatable visuals and props, including student ideas, and delivering messages of affirmation (Understood, 2023a). Burnham, K.
