Targeted Reflection 7: Differentiation for ELs
Differentiated instruction caters to the unique needs of every student. All children,
including gifted, ESE, and English language learners, should receive differentiated teaching.
Overall, compared to others in the class, Ell's students need more differentiation. Several tactics
can be used to guarantee our English language learners' success. Setting expectations,
collaborating in small groups, and simplifying the material so that all kids can understand it are
some of the tactics that can be applied. Regardless of your students' academic background,
interests, languages, skill levels, or cultural backgrounds, it is critical to get to know them. The
spectrum of academic talents, interests, languages spoken, and language skill levels among
English language learners is broad. Exposing ELL students to the same level of instruction as the
rest of the class is helpful for the teacher since it helps set expectations and methods for the ELLs
to learn and demonstrate their knowledge based on their competency. Small groups of students
are required for efficient instruction, and teachers can maintain flexibility in the groups by
assigning students to different peers for a range of tasks. By making the information
understandable to all students, teachers can give ELLs multiple methods to acquire vital content,
giving them the same material as other students while also helping them to improve their English
language proficiency.
