edition HW-10: Case Study-3
Chapter-15 1) Case Study #47 page 561: Big state Highway Department (www.oup.com/us/newnan) Bigstate’s highway department must select projects to be built during the coming year and only have a budget of 36 million. There are 11 projects that passed the preliminary screening, and I must decide which one to move forward with. When deciding I must consider people’s lives and health and also selecting a minimum of three projects from the sets A, B, D, F, H or J and at most one from A or C. The projects that I would recommend are F1, G, H, I, and J1. These are the ones I would recommend because these would fit in the budget while fulfilling all the reequipment and as well as limiting the loss of life and the total injuries that happen on the sites. There would also be a smaller remainder of the budget left with $100,000 not being spent.
Chapter-16: 2) Case Study # 48 page 591: Dot Puff Project Selection (
www.oup.com/us/newnan
) The Department of Transportation, Public Utilities, and Facilities (DOTPUF) need to decided what projects to work on next. They have some important factors that they want to keep track of them being keeping workload not to high or low as when it to high the team is pressured in working overtime without additional compensation and when to low the team is frustrated with having to “appear” busy. Cost Benefit Ratio Rate of Return Project I 1.84 21.20 Project N 1.69 24.40 I would recommend projects N and I because they yielded the highest values for the benefit cost ratio and rate of return. When compared to the rest these two stand out as they are much higher them the other options that is why io believe that they would be the best options.

Part 1
York-Perry Industries (YPI) manufactures a mix of affordable guitars (A, B, C) that are fabricated and assembled at four different processing stations (W, X, Y, Z). The operation is a batch process with small setup times that can be considered negligible. The product information (price, weekly demand, and processing times) and process sequences are shown below. Purchased parts and raw materials (shown as a per-unit consumption rate) are represented by inverted triangles. YPI is able to make and sell up to the limit of its demand per week with no penalties incurred for not meeting the full demand. Fred, Owner of The Sandtrap
Characters: Lucy, Employee
Lucy, a college student, is a waitress at a popular eating and drinking establishment called
The Sandtrap, located on the local beach. This restaurant is known for nightly bands and
great entertainment. The usual uniform for waitresses is jeans or similar long pants and a
"Sandtrap" T-shirt.
Business is always good during the spring and summer months while everyone is
vacationing, but during the winter months there is a steady decline. In an effort to improve
business during the off-season months, Fred, the Sandtrap's owner, tried a number of new
strategies and gimmicks to increase patronage. A past plan was to include extended happy
hour specials and complimentary forger foods to customers. His latest successful strategy is
to require all waitresses to wear…

Management in Action
Tim and Richard Smucker Manage a Great Place to Work
According to a study conducted for Fortune
magazine by the Great Place to Work Institute,
the best company to work for in America is
headquartered in Orrville, Ohio (population
8,000). Orrville is a quiet, tidy town 50 miles
south of Cleveland. Employees don't get any
razzle-dazzle perk such as pet insurance. The
J.M. Smucker Co. is a 107-year-old, family-
controlled business that is run by two brothers
who tend to quote the New Testament and Ben
Franklin. It's a throwback to a simpler time.
Smucker's gimmick-free management starts
with the co-CÉO,, Tim and Richard Smucker,
who took the reins in 2001. Tim and Richard are
popular with the 2,930 employees-they're
affectionately known as the "boys"-which isn't
too surprising given that the company's stock had
a total return of 100 percent during the past five
years. (The vast majority of stocks lost about 25
percent in value during…
