There are two theories that can help an HIM professional continuously improve the processes within an organization known as six sigma and lean. The Lean Six Sigma approach is the product of two processes that are based on improving performance by eliminating wasteful resources and defects (Kelly & Greenstone, 2020, p. 11). Six Sigma and lean operations management theories are also known as “LSS” is a team focused effort to reduce defects and processes. The six sigma was created to improve the overall approach in business processes, and to identify any issues that may affect the quality of the organization. Six Sigma was created by the Motorola Company in 1986, which is a set of techniques and tools utilized to improve the capability of an organizational business processes.It was created to identify defects in the manufacturing process and improve variability in product results when implementing process improvement programs (Kelly & Greenstone, 2020, p.11) Lean is a managerial approach that can improve the value for customers while maintaining minimal utilization of resources. Lean theory can also be utilized within any organizational environment wishing to improve their strategies of operation. Lean Six Sigma focuses on eight types of waste such as defects, overproduction, waiting, non-utilized talent, transportation, inventory, motion, and extra-processing. These eight types of waste defects are also referred to as “DOWNTIME”. Lean focuses on reducing waste and promoting work standardization and flow, while Six Sigma focuses on reducing process variation and enhancing process control. Lean Six Sigma is very useful within the healthcare setting, eliminating and identifying defects can reduce the potential of medical errors that could eventually affect both the care of the patients, and the organization.
