SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STRATEGIES
Scenario #1
The Fanda Fiero was a controversial vehicle, particularly after allegations that the Fiero's structural design allowed its fuel tank to be punctured in a rear-end collision, resulting in deadly fires from spilled fuel. After the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) directed Fanda to recall the Fiero, they recalled the car and put some fixes in place.
Which strategy is it?
Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.)
This scenario uses a defensive strategy. This is because the strategy states that they seek protection by doing the minimum legally required. The Fanda Fiero became controversial due to allegations about an unsafe structural design. Instead of fighting
and denying these allegations the company decided to do what the NHTSA suggested and recalled the vehicle. This shows that they decided to meet the minimum legal requirements and just fix what was wrong with the car after the recall instead of taking further steps.
Scenario #2
Nazim Kadri Donuts has made a commitment to the communities in the country. NKD has hired many people with disabilities to work in the franchises. Also, they have been incorporating green building design into new and existing locations. In addition, aims to help economically disadvantaged children participate in the NKD Children’s Foundation camps and programs.
Which strategy is it?
Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.)
This scenario uses a proactive strategy. This strategy states that leadership is taken in social initiatives. Nazim Kadri Donuts shows leadership in social initiatives by taking steps such as incorporating green building designs into their locations. They have also been helping economically disadvantaged kids participate in their foundation’s camps and programs as well as hired many people with disabilities to work with their franchise. Doing these initiatives, the company is taking a lead and setting an example for other companies. NKD is able to address different social issues and commit to the communities they work with my
addressing general issues around us. On top of the economic and legal expectations NKD is also able to meet the ethical and discretionary expectations of our society.
Scenario #3
Shady Energy grew wealthy due largely to marketing, promoting power, and its high stock price. Shady Energy was named "Canada's Most Innovative Company" by the magazine Fortune
for six consecutive years. However, Shady Energy's recorded assets and profits were inflated or even wholly fraudulent and nonexistent.
Which strategy is it?
Obstructionist Defensive Accommodative Proactive Explanation: (In sentences explain and justify your thinking about why it is the above strategy.)
The strategy used in this scenario is obstructionist. This strategy focuses on the economic priorities of the business and fights social demands instead of adhering to them. Shady Energy had assets and profits that are inflated, fraudulent, or non-existent because they wanted the company to be doing well economically. Shady Energy did not care to meet the legal and ethical demands of the society as long as they were able to prosper economically through their wealth and profits, even if they were not real.
