Individual Question to be answered after the game - EVEREST GAME
1.
What did you learn about teamwork and about your individual conduct in the Everest Simulation Game?
In reflecting on my experience with the Everest Simulation Game, I gained profound insights into teamwork dynamics, drawing from both the principles outlined in Chapter 11 titled “Teams: Characteristics and Diversity” of "Organizational Behavior: Improving Performance and Commitment in the Workplace Eight Edition" by Jason Colquitt, Jeffery LePine, and Michael Wesson, as well as the application of Belbin Team Roles.
The chapter provides a comprehensive overview of team dynamics, emphasizing the significance of effective communication, collaboration, and coordination in achieving organizational goals. As we navigated through the simulation, I found the concepts discussed in the textbook to be highly relevant to our experiences. Discussions on team composition and diversity, leadership styles, and decision-making processes provided a theoretical framework that helped contextualize our real-world interactions within the game.
Simultaneously, the Belbin Team Roles framework offered practical insights into optimizing team performance by identifying and leveraging each member's unique strengths and preferred roles. This approach resonated with our team, as we actively sought to capitalize on individual differences to enhance
collaboration and productivity. Roles such as Coordinator, Implementer, and Team Worker emerged naturally within our team, reflecting the diverse skill sets and contributions of each member.
My role as a Coordinator within the team echoed the principles of shared leadership discussed in the chapter. Rather than relying solely on formal leadership structures, we embraced a distributed leadership approach, where leadership emerged organically based on expertise and situational context. This facilitated a more inclusive decision-making process and allowed us to capitalize on the diverse perspectives and skills within our team.
Overall, my experience with the Everest Simulation Game underscored the relevance and applicability of both the concepts discussed in Chapter 11 of the textbook and the insights provided by the Belbin Team Roles framework. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience, I gained a deeper understanding of teamwork dynamics and my role within the team, ultimately enhancing my ability to collaborate effectively and achieve shared goals in future endeavors.
2.
What did you discover about yourself from participating in the team simulation?
Participating in the team simulation provided me with valuable insights into my strengths, weaknesses, and areas for personal development. Through reflection, I discovered several key aspects about myself:
Leadership Style
: The simulation allowed me to observe my natural tendencies and preferences as a leader within the team. I discovered that I am inclined towards a collaborative leadership approach, where
I prioritize fostering open communication, soliciting input from team members, and promoting a supportive team environment. This aligns with my belief in shared leadership and the importance of leveraging collective expertise to achieve common goals.
Communication Skills
: Engaging in the simulation highlighted the importance of effective communication in driving team success. I recognized my ability to articulate ideas clearly, actively listen to others, and facilitate productive discussions. However, I also became aware of areas where I could improve, such as assertiveness and confidence in expressing my viewpoints assertively without dominating the conversation.
Adaptability
: The dynamic nature of the simulation challenged me to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and collaborate effectively with diverse team members. I discovered that I am flexible and adaptable, capable of adjusting my approach based on situational demands and the needs of the team. This
adaptability proved invaluable in navigating challenges and fostering resilience amidst uncertainty.
Conflict Resolution Skills
: Instances of conflict within the team provided opportunities for me to develop
my conflict resolution skills. I discovered that I am adept at identifying underlying issues, facilitating constructive dialogue, and finding mutually beneficial solutions. However, I also recognized the importance of managing emotions and maintaining composure during tense situations, areas where I can further enhance my skills.
Teamwork and Collaboration
: Participating in the simulation reinforced my appreciation for teamwork and collaboration. I discovered that I thrive in collaborative environments where individuals are empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and skills towards a common goal. Moreover, I recognized the importance of fostering a supportive team culture, where trust, respect, and mutual accountability are paramount for success.
Overall, participating in the team simulation provided me with a deeper understanding of myself as a team member and leader. It allowed me to identify my strengths, areas for improvement, and opportunities for personal growth, ultimately enhancing my ability to collaborate effectively and contribute meaningfully to future team endeavors.
3.
What would you do differently in the future in such team situations?
Reflecting on my experience in the team simulation, I've identified several areas where I would approach future team situations differently. Despite not being designated as the leader, I found myself naturally stepping into a leadership role, which influenced my reflections on the following:
Enhance Communication
: In future team situations, I recognize the need to prioritize further improvement in communication skills. While I actively participated in discussions and shared my ideas, I realized the importance of being more assertive in expressing my viewpoints. Additionally, I aim to refine
my active listening skills to ensure that I understand and acknowledge the perspectives of others fully.
Develop Conflict Resolution Strategies:
As someone who assumed a leadership role, I understand the significance of developing robust conflict resolution strategies. While I navigated conflicts during the simulation, I acknowledged the need to refine my skills in managing emotions and facilitating constructive dialogue. This involves remaining composed under pressure and actively seeking win-win solutions that address the concerns of all team members.
Strengthen Leadership Abilities
: Although not formally designated as the leader, I took it upon myself to provide guidance and direction to the team. In future team situations, I aim to further enhance my leadership abilities by refining my decision-making processes and delegating tasks effectively.
