What I Learned:
I have learned that leadership is not about power, control or title, it is how you motivate and encourage others to strive towards their goals. Cultivating growth and development should be the goals of the leader. Leadership requires continuous learning, and it is not just limited to office settings but can be used anywhere in different aspects of life.
Personal reaction: I have found asking myself about my leadership skills, I have been into a leadership role in my past job experience and through personal reflection, I have found out that I need to improve on a few things. Flexibility and adaptability in various situations is something that is missing in me. Our classes discussions have made me curious and have made a positive impact overall on my personality.
2.
Analysis of Skill/Level: I have participated in various assignments, individual and group projects in this current and previous program at Mohawk college. Through self-assessment, I have been able to learn about my strengths and weaknesses. I took the Myers-Briggs self-assessment test and found my personality type. The test really helped me in getting reflection of who I am. I have found that I excel in communication, giving support and empathy, problem solving skills as a part of leadership whereas flexibility and adaptability are the skills that I need to work on. I have had feedback from my peers and teachers related to my weaknesses and have taken their feedback constructively. My friends have told me that I resist change and it acts as an obstacle somewhere. I have also used my strengths to provide supportive team culture.
3.
Action Plan:
Areas to improve: I believe areas to improve are Elasticity and adaptability.
Why? What is the Payoff?: It will help me in gaining trust and build relationships. This will in the end be fruitful as a team overall.
Potential Obstacles: Time may be an issue. To cope up with everything and take out time
to work on my weaknesses might be an issue. Secondly, I think my resistance to change might make me uncomfortable.
Specific Actions: Get training related to flexibility. Engage in exercises where adaptability is a must. Go through various case studies related to flexibility and adaptability to see how other leaders acted and responded in various situations that are related.
Timeline: I need to implement my strategies as soon as possible during my team communications.
Measurement of Success: Feedback from team members and instructors can help me in measuring my success. This can also be done by setting up various goals and achieving them one by one.
