First explain, in one paragraph, why Michael West believes that it was ethical to pay
gifts to the local government officials in Brazil.
Michael West saw it fit to gift the Brazilian government officials as it’s an accepted practice in Brazil to show appreciation. Secondly with Brazil being a foreign territory for West’s business help was always paramount, therefore a small gift would have ensured good friendship for the business and its new environment
.
Next explain, in one paragraph, why the company (International Harvester) believes
that it was necessary to fire Michael West for his actions
.
As a manager West did not consider damaging the company’s reputation by putting profits Infront of company’s values. He didn’t consult before going ahead with what he knew will be against company policies. Lastly as a manager it was West’s duty to find all
means possible to close a deal other than to go against company’s policies.
Finally explain, in one paragraph, whether you agree with Michael West or International Harvester in this example and why.
I agree with International Harvester to fire Michael West. West should have employed different tactics in order to close this deal. By gifting officials Michael was denying International Harvester full control of their operations in Brazil as they would have been
gifted contract on favor basis rather than rightfully and legally earning the contract giving
them full control. Finally, Michael should serve as a warning to everyone wishing to violate company’s policies which are there to ensure smooth operation of business.
