Week 02
1.
Choose a few of the following to answer (you must answer more than one):
○
Which aspects of President Oaks’ counsel were the most meaningful to you? Why do you feel this way?
○
What goal (or area of improvement) will you work on, based on what you’ve learned? How will you measure your progress?
○
What new questions did this reading raise, and what do you plan to do with those questions?
1. As I reflect on President Oaks' counsel in his speech "Will I Lead?", I find that several aspects of his message resonate deeply with me.
Firstly, his emphasis on the importance of service in leadership is something that I feel strongly about. I believe that true leaders are those who put the needs of others before their own, and are willing to make sacrifices for the greater good. President Oaks' reminder of this principle is both inspiring and humbling, and encourages me to be more selfless in my own leadership roles.
Another aspect of his counsel that stands out to me is his emphasis on personal responsibility. As someone who values autonomy and independence, I appreciate his reminder that I have the power to make my own decisions and shape my own path in life. This reminder encourages me to take ownership of my choices and to be proactive in pursuing my goals and dreams.
Finally, I am deeply moved by President Oaks' emphasis on humility in leadership. As someone who has struggled with pride in the past, his words serve as a reminder that true
leadership requires a willingness to listen to and learn from others, and to be willing to admit when I am wrong. This reminder humbles me and encourages me to strive for greater humility in all areas of my life.
2. After listening to President Oaks' speech "Will I Lead?", I am inspired to work on improving my leadership skills in the area of humility. Specifically, I want to become more willing to listen to others and to admit when I am wrong. I recognize that I have a tendency to be stubborn and to cling to my own ideas and opinions, even when others have valid points to make.
To measure my progress, I plan to set specific goals for myself in the coming weeks and months. For example, I will make a conscious effort to actively listen to others during meetings and discussions, and to genuinely consider their ideas and perspectives. I will also make a commitment to apologize and make amends when I have made a mistake or hurt someone's feelings.
In addition, I plan to seek feedback from others to help me gauge my progress. I will ask trusted colleagues and friends to give me honest feedback on how I am doing in terms of being more humble and open-minded. I will take their feedback to heart and make PM 200 - Advanced Project Management

adjustments as needed.
Ultimately, my goal is to become a more effective and compassionate leader, one who is truly committed to serving others and making a positive impact in the world. I know that this will be a challenging journey, but I am excited to take it on and see where it leads me.
2.
Explain your understanding of the principles taught in President Oaks’ talk. Provide an example of how you can apply the principles you’ve learned to your work as a project manager.
(HINT: review the Doctrines, Principles, and Applications attachment in the assignment instructions)
I found President Oaks' speech "Will I Lead?" to be both inspiring and thought-provoking. I believe that the principles he teaches can be applied in many different contexts, including in my work as a project manager.
One of the key principles that stood out to me was the importance of service in leadership. President Oaks reminds us that true leaders are those who are willing to put the needs of others before their own, and who are committed to making a positive impact on the world around them. As a project manager, I can apply this principle by being more attentive to the needs of my
team members and stakeholders, and by seeking out opportunities to serve them in meaningful ways.
For example, I might take the time to get to know each team member individually, and to understand their unique strengths, weaknesses, and interests. I might also look for ways to provide additional support and resources to team members who are struggling, and to celebrate
the successes and accomplishments of the team as a whole.
Another principle that stood out to me was the importance of humility in leadership. President Oaks emphasizes that leaders must be willing to listen to others and to admit when they are wrong. As a project manager, I can apply this principle by being more open-minded and receptive to feedback, and by being willing to make course corrections when necessary.
For example, if a team member brings up a concern or suggests a new approach to a problem, I might take the time to really listen to their perspective and to consider their ideas. I might also be
willing to acknowledge my own mistakes and to make adjustments as needed to keep the project on track.
3.
Based on your study of Bruce Tuckman’s Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing model, how will you assist your PM 200 project team through the storming and norming stages? What specific strategies do you plan to employ?
-performing team. Based on my study of Bruce Tuckman's Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing model, I plan to employ the following strategies to assist my PM 200 project team through these stages:
Encourage open communication: During the storming stage, conflicts and disagreements may arise as team members begin to establish their roles and responsibilities. I plan to encourage PM 200 - Advanced Project Management

FACTS:
N Bank, with nearly 150 branches (from Napa Valley, California, to
Seattle, Washington) and 8.3 billion in assets, is committed to creating and
maintaining a corporate culture that provides excellent customer service. A
key component of the bank’s overall retail strategy is its “universal
associate” program (that is what N Bank calls its employees).
At N Bank, each universal associate is trained to perform every banking
task. A teller can take a loan application, and a mortgage officer is able to
assist a customer in opening a safe-deposit box. A significant side benefit
of this culture is that N's employee turnover is one-half the industry
average. Another benefit is that employee boredom is reduced by
performing multiple tasks daily. An employee’s workday varies based on
which departments are slow and/or busy. In contrast, at a typical bank,
employees specialize in certain tasks; thus, employees often have an “it’s
not my job” mentality.
N Bank’s employees are empowered to…

CASE 2 - STARBUCK : Listen to Your Customers
Starbucks unleashed "My Starbucks Idea" in 2008. The goal was to give customers an easy way to submit their
requests and concerns in a better place than a suggestion box. The result - over 300 ideas from this microsite have
made it into Starbucks stores around the world. Some of the highlights include: the new Hazelnut Machiatto flavor, a
free treat for birthdays, and even the iconic green splash sticks that are now on the self-service counter by the
napkins and sleeves. All of this came from hearing out what customers wanted and making the necessary changes.
Promotional items are always valuable, whether they're offered for free or sold in a gift shop. Starbucks knows all
about that value with their eye-catching custom travel mugs, tumblers, and ceramic mugs. They change these up
every season, keeping things interesting for their dedicated fans. Today, the Starbucks mugs are some of the most
iconic promotional items of all time! In fact,…

Critical Thinking In recent years, for packaged products
the FDA has proposed that companies include the per-
centage daily value for added sugar on the nutrition la-
bel. The primary reasoning behind this proposal is that it
would provide information on added sugars comparable
to what consumers have been exposed to for nutrients
such as saturated fat and sodium that the FDA advises
should be limited in consumption.46 Do you think that this
update to include added sugar is necessary? Do you be-
lieve that this update will alter how people consume and
make consumption decisions on products containing add-
ed sugars? Explain the reasoning behind your answers.
