As you work through Task 1, this is an opportunity to learn more about who you are as a leader. Below is an example of the 'chunking technique' that helps focus on one small section at a time (day 1, day 2, etc.) that can be applied as you believe it fits your style of learning. The C200 course study plan (left side of the course) is self-contained and sequential. In other words, everything you need to write and pass Task 1/Task 2 is in the study plan, in order, starting with the Theories of Leadership section (Preparing for Task 1 Section A). I strongly encourage you to be inside the C200 course, following the study plan, while writing Task 1. Additionally, on the right side of the C200 course, under Course Announcements and Course Tips are additional resources. Tips for Task 1: Author the paper in first person. We recommend using the “Sample academic paper” when organizing your task. You are encouraged to create a cover page, a table of contents, headers, and sub-headers throughout the paper. Preparing for Task 1 Section A (under the Theories of Leadership section of the C200 course): DAY 1: CliftonStrengths Assessment. Take the CliftonStrengths Assessment and download the Signature Themes report to your computer. DAY 2: Section A, Personal Leadership Analysis. In this section, you will complete and explain the results of the CliftonStrengths assessment. CliftonStrengths is a leadership assessment tool that will help you identify and apply your top five categorical strengths to become a more effective leader. This section is an analysis of your leadership. Refer to your results from the CliftonStrengths assessment. You must upload your PDF version of your Signature Themes report when you submit your final paper. Explain what the results might indicate about you as a leader. You must explain your top five categorical strengths results. Be descriptive and provide examples. Your explanation should include: a separate paragraph for each strength category, the category title, your results, and your reflection on the results including both descriptive and explanatory examples. This reflection is not related to theory. INSTRUCTOR BEST PRACTICES FOR THIS SECTION: ***Put this section all in your own words; no need to cite from the Signature Themes report. Ensure you provide a specific example of YOURSELF with each strength (this can be a personal or work-related example) a nd an explanation of ‘why’ you believe it is a strength. DAY 3: Section B of Task 1. In this section, you will perform a personal leadership analysis of three of your strengths and three of your weaknesses. You will then make three recommendations to improve your leadership effectiveness. Apply one scholarly leadership theory (listed below) to all three sections of this task: B1, B2, and B3. ***Nothing to write here, go right into Section B1. Transformational leadership
Transactional leadership Situational leadership Participative leadership Servant leadership Behavioral leadership Trait theory of leadership Note: It is highly recommended that you use at least three distinct and unique scholarly sources to support the scholarly leadership theory. INSTRUCTOR BEST PRACTICES: Review the scholarly article for each leadership theory (in the C200 course study plan). Choose ONE theory YOU believe you most resemble. Find, at minimum, three scholarly articles that discuss that theory. You may use any articles within the C200 course and/or WGU (Western Governors University) Library. Task 1 requires three total in-text citations (one in Section B1 from a unique scholarly article, one in B2 for the same, and one in B3 for the same). You can do more, but not less. DAY 3: Section B1, Personal Leadership Strengths. In this section, discuss three personal leadership strengths, describing in detail how the three strengths you identified align with your chosen scholarly leadership theory. This section of the task requires scholarly research. Provide specific examples to support each strength and include at least one in-text citation using a scholarly source. Write a separate paragraph for each of the three strengths. ***INSTRUCTOR BEST PRACTICES: You may use your CliftonStrengths or self-identify your leadership strengths (things you know you do well) in this section (if you use 3 of your CliftonStrengths, ensure you use different wording and examples from Section A). Make sure to provide a specific example of YOU (work- related example) with this leadership strength and an explanation of ‘why’ you believe it is a strength (what value or impact does that strength provide?). For all 3 leadership strengths ensure you connect each one with the leadership theory you chose for yourself. Use one of the scholarly articles you found, to provide the required ONE in-text citation in this section (the in-text citation should point to the leadership theory as it relates to this section). DAY 4: Section B2, Personal Leadership Weaknesses. In this section, we discuss three personal leadership weaknesses, describing in detail how the three weaknesses you identified align with the chosen scholarly leadership theory. This section of the task requires scholarly research. Use the same scholarly leadership theory that you used in B1. Provide specific examples to support each weakness and include at least one in-text citation using a scholarly source. Write a separate paragraph for each of the three weaknesses. ***INSTRUCTOR BEST PRACTICES: You want to self-identify your leadership weaknesses (this is NOT on the Signature Themes report anywhere):
Think of leadership characteristics you wish you were better at those might be your leadership weaknesses. Another way to think about it, is to think of your CliftonStrengths and what those strengths might look like when used unproductively/ineffectively. For example, if I have a CliftonStrengths of command and I am using it ineffectively, Others may say I am rude, bossy, micro-managing These (rude, bossy, micro-managing) could be leadership weaknesses. Ensure you provide a specific example of YOU (work-related example) with each leadership weakness. Ensure you provide a discussion of ‘why’ you believe it is a leadership weakness (what consequences happen with each weakness). Ensure you connect each weakness to the chosen leadership theory how is this weakness a weakness of the theory? Use that 2nd scholarly article you found for the required one in-text citation (pointing to the leadership theory as it pertains to this section). DAY 5: Section B3, Recommendations for Personal Leadership. Now that you have reflected on your current leadership strengths and weaknesses, recommend three specific actions, behaviors, or practices that would improve your effectiveness in leading people and organizations. The recommendations address your identified leadership weaknesses and align with the chosen scholarly leadership theory. This section of the task requires scholarly research. Use the same scholarly leadership theory used in B1. Provide specific examples to support each actionable item and include at least one in-text citation using a scholarly source. Write a separate paragraph for each of the three recommendations. ***INSTRUCTOR BEST PRACTICES: You want to think of an ‘actionable’ recommendation for each leadership weakness you discussed in Section B2. For example: If I have a weakness of not being able to swim the ‘actionable’ recommendation I could make is to take swimming lessons over the summer at the YMCA. Ensure you provide a specific example of YOU and how you would follow through with the recommendation, Ensure you explain ‘why’ you believe the recommendation will be effective/beneficial, Ensure you connect each recommendation to the leadership theory you chose for yourself and, Use that 3rd scholarly article for the required one in-text citation in this section (pointing to the leadership theory). DAY 6: Section C, SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, & Time) Goals. INSTRUCTOR BEST PRACTICES: In this section, you want to think of two SMART Goals for yourself. Each SMART Goal should be a short-term goal you set for yourself that will support your growth as a leader. ***Think about things you can do for yourself, that will help you grow/improve as a leader. Make sure the ‘time - bound’ component of e ach SMART Goal is MM/DD/YYYY (for the purposes of the paper, keep the date the goal will be completed under a year).
