Report
T-Mobile US is my current employer of over eight years. The company’s mission statement declared by CEO, Mike Sievert, is simplified into “to be the best in the world at connecting customers to their world” (2023, A word from our CEO, Mike). The company originally purchased from Deutsche Telekom, a German based company, now resides their headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas and Bellevue, Washington after a recent merger. T-Mobile is a public sector with around 71,000 employees that take care of approximately 118 million customers as of Q3 2023 (T-Mobile US, Inc., 2023). T- Mobile offers wireless service to allow customers to stay connected to their world via cellular, tablets, watches, home internet, and many more. T-Mobile has gone through many changes over the last five years that it is clear there is a disconnect between their message of a mission statement and how they are motivating us as employees when most of us have been worried if we even have a job and why are pay is constantly decreasing. Burkus (2020) discusses this same issue in his blog about how there is a missing piece among employees when believing in T- Mobile’s mission statement and waking up every day to be motivated at work. In a management position, I am constantly finding ways to motivate my sales reps. I understand T-Mobile’s mission and do believe it hits the main topics Burkus discusses except for the motivation piece. It becomes challenging to inspire when employees are less motivated from continuous company change and focus. The stakeholders at T-Mobile are their customers, employees, investors, and competitors. The mission statement can be improved to send a more unifying message to all stakeholders involved with a more internal motivating piece. I believe the message is already straightforward and direct. Unity will allow the company to work together and
grow in a friendly competitive manner. The company merged Sprint and T-Mobile into one company, T-Mobile, and in my opinion, that has been a start of the disconnect. The mission statement should be adjusted including a message of growth and a more direct way of sending a valuable message to the employees since the employees are a major part of why T-Mobile is successful. This can be done by taking the time and measuring out the success that has been going on for three years but include everyone in the mission statement improvements. The company sends quarterly surveys to voice our opinions and is a way of measuring our quarterly results. The surveys have a scale ranking and can incorporate the change and measure if T-Mobile is making the change and the response to the change. References: Burkus, D.
