Ethical practices/surprises with couples and families
I was surprised to discover that adultery is considered a crime in certain states and a keeping secrets from your spouse could result in an individual being charged with alienation of affection. As a counselor it is important to be aware of state laws because counselors are not allowed to condone illegal
activity by keeping secrets (Bass, & Quimby, 2006). The most important factor in a counselor and client relationship is confidentiality and trust. Marriage and family therapist must respect and protect the confidentiality concerns of every client (AAMFT, 2018). Without trust it will be difficult for the client to open up and share information regarding their life. The trust and
professional licensure of the counselor is at jeopardy when secrets become exposed and the counselor is forced to expose those secrets with other participating clients in a session.
Intimidation/Challenges when working with families
My biggest challenge or intimidation with working with a family would be trying to solve their problem/ not being able to solve their issues. The therapeutic relationship is about assisting the clients on their journey of discovery and new beginnings. I struggle with the feeling of failure if I am unable to get great results. Being mindful that I will not be able to help every
client and knowing that it is their journey will be important. Another challenge would be addressing issues that are opposing to my values and beliefs. I do not wish to judge my client or try to convince them to change their beliefs but being aware of my biases and learning new ideas from my client will change my idea of what challenge means. The main idea of the therapy session is being able to see a perspective beyond our own reality and learn/ observe from the perspective of the client (Sherbersky, 2012).
How will you incorporate ethics into your professional development?
Being aware of the ethical guidelines and making ethical decisions will be important in my professional development. Making sure that I keep up with any changes that may come up and speaking with my supervisors about uncertain decisions will help to ensure that I am progressing in a professional
manner.
Do you think you would have handled some of the situations presented in the video differently? If so, what would you have done differently?
I do believe all of the situations in the videos were handled very well. I also live in a very small community so it is easy to come across potential clients and establishing boundaries at the initial meeting is very important. As long as the greeting is professional and brief , I do not see much harm in saying hello. Although people may be aware of the counseling profession, I do believe a hello is an appropriate greeting for anyone and not making an
obvious decision of bringing awareness of the counseling/client relationship in public can be beneficial.

You are the VP of Human Resources at a large public insurance company. Recently, one of your company’s top sales agents, Linda Brown, asked to see you privately. When she came to see you in your office, she told you that when she had first started with the company in the early 1980’s, she was one of the first female sales agents the company had hired. She was young and attractive, but she was also aggressive and ambitious. She said she dealt with a lot of harassing behavior back then from her male counterparts: comments about her appearance, offensive jokes, even rumors that she was “sleeping her way to the top.” At the time, she decided that she was just going to have to put up with it to be successful. She even participated in some of the suggestive banter and learned to hold her own among her sexist counterparts.
Recently, however, Linda’s perspective had changed. Although she is in her 40’s and is married, she still deals with a lot of inappropriate…
