Desroches 1 Fredlyne Desroches SPED 290 Case study 1 (MOD 5-6) 11/18/23 The case about Eli receiving telehealth services is a very interesting case study that bring up various ethical concerns and BACB principles. This paper will identify 4 ethical concerns cited by the BACB principles in Eli’s case study, the course of action on how to address the issues and specific recommendations for the future. Technology has allowed BCBA’s the convenience and luxury to provide telehealth in an adaptable way to provide effective treatment. However, there a few ethical issues that arise like in Eli’s case study. Record keeping, maintaining a professional demeanor and confidentiality are ethical issues that occurred in this case. There are specific ethical codes to be followed to ensure the compliance of BCBA’s. These codes include (2.06) Maintaining Confidentiality, (3.03) Be- havior Analytic Assessment Consent, (4.07) Environmental Conditions that Interfere with Imple- mentation, and (8.04) Media Presentations and Media-Based Services (Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts, 2019). These ethical concerns of telehealth can have an impact on Applied Behavior Analysis. In the first ethics code mentioned above, it was important to get consent from Eli’s mother for the simple fact that information can get into the wrong hands when using technological modes of communication. Its critical to verbally be clear with the client(s) you’re working with. The next ethics code assesses whether or not the parent understands the consent forms of ethical code 3.03. This can be a bit tricky in that the idea of telehealth can create a scenario where there is an
Desroches 2 ethical violation where the parent doesn’t understand the consent forms. I believe there needs to be a review board or a team that a BCBA can refer to address the limitations when using rule- base ethics (Rosenberg, 2018). The next code, 4.07, ethical concerns raised with the environ- ment in which Eli as it present broken equipment and when the child was playing with the ether cords (Romani, 2017). This type of potential harmful behavior can be an impediment to imple- mentation and is a limitation and the recommendation here would be to discontinue telehealth services and have face-to-face services instead. The next ethical code that was in questions was the use of media presentations and media-based services, 8.04. It is so important to make sure that all equipment is HIPPA and FERPA compliant to ensure and safeguard the clients privacy and confidentiality. The recommendation here for all BCBA’s to be trained in equipment com- pliance and the protection of client information before providing telehealth services. Further- more, the suggestion of ameliorating ethical challenges are to create telehealth model for a BCBA’s to follow so there will be no issues moving forward (Peterson, 2019). My other ethical concerns regarding this case as a future BCBA professional in the field of ABA is with ethical code, Professional and Scientific relationships (1.05) (BACB, 2019). It raised an ethical concern for me because of Eli’s potential harmful behaviors, the implementation of any types of services can be hindered if social cues are not read accurately (Romani, 2017). The recommendation is for a monthly competency and professional meeting to make sure the BCBA’s are compliant on documentation and practicing within the scope of competence.
