Summary of Negotiations When negotiating, it is important to understand that negotiation is a process that is crucial to how the company develops over time. Negotiation is discussion aimed at reaching an agreement” (Dictionary.com ) . A strong leader will have good negotiation skills so they can be able to negotiate what they want and have the other side either accept the terms or not accept the terms for the outcome desired. When negotiation is successful, the negotiator has developed the perfect working environment they are developing for the company. When negotiating the goal is to meet in the middle and have a common ground that will benefit everyone involved and that they all agree too as all parties are happy and it becomes a win-win situation. Negotiation skills are skills a person should be used to help improve one's understanding, communication, and decision-making skills in the workplace and to help understand what are the goals that need to be met. When implementing this skill, they are used to help employees in building and developing teamwork, helping in making the right choices, and being able to manage conflicts within a company and employees, this skill will help in developing strong negotiating skills . Negotiation skills are important when working as a leader in a company as they can set in place a positive and respectable relationship with everyone in the company regardless of what their positions are. When a negotiation process is successful this creates a positive outcome with employees and creates employees' idority within the company. Sharon Slade, who is Netflix's chief human resource officer, has aggressive negation tactics that have worked in her favor for the success of Netflix. When Sharon Slade brought her own innovative approach when she came onboard, her innovations developed the type of company Netflix runs today. “It is imper ative for Sharon (CHRO (Chie f Human Resources Officer)) to have an effective negotiation technique; as this may decide which direction Sharon is moving Netflix in, and this also possibly chan g es how the company’s employees will respond to this new aggressive method. “(McCord, 2014 ). As we look at the case of Netflix, we will focus on Sharon Slade who is Netflix's Chief of Human Resource, the policies of Netflix and Negotiants skills of Alice Jones who is the Director of Operations for Netflix and her outcome being employed at Netflix. Alice has not been performing Netflix's expectations and it was the decision was made to place Alice on a performance improvement plan. Alice is an employee who has been with the company for ten years, but she was nonperforming, and the PIP was an option that was put in place to help her meet her performance again. So, when looking at the case there are many different negation factors that will be involved in Alices fat. When developing an effective negation process, Sharon must be ready to answer the 5W, as this will make her negation efforts successful. The 5W are as follows: Who? What? When? Where? Why? And how? It is important that Sharon uses the 5W approach as this will give her the InfoMation needed for a successful negotiation process. Negotiation fact pattern
Negotiations are important when it comes to work relationships as it can help develop relationships between individuals and develop policies that are effective and will overall assist in making the company successful. Having positive negotiations will help both the company and the employees to communicate effectively while focusing on the future . It is important that Sharon has a strong persona this will help her to be successful with her negotiation skills, these skills will determine the outcome and reactions of the employees at Netflix act towards these changes that are being implemented in Netflix culture. The case being presented about Netflix and Alice it will show that there was an area of concern in her performance and something need to change as Alice knew her job description and what was expected of her this is where Sharon steps in to get the answers due to her background and experience she was the right person to deal with this situation correctly. Types of power There are six bases of power, and they are: Official Power, Transactional Power, Coercive Power, Knowledge Power, Charismatic Power, and Principle-Centered Power. To understand Sharon and how she was able to hold on to the power she did is to know the six bases of power. The use of these Sharon negotiated on her terms and changed tactics depending on the situation and the person. To handle the issue with Alice Sharon was able to use serval different bases of power thru her negation efforts with Alice X Cultural Analysis Overview Looking at Netflix and reading about their culture, it is not like other companies. Their culture is outside the box and there is no room for error. When people look at their culture it comes off as if the company is mean harsh and scary to work for but that is not the case, they just have grand expectations of their employees and want them to have the same. . “Netflix formed a culture by not creating nice-sounding values” (SlideShare, 2009) . Netflix do not sugar coat nothing the company is straight forward with what goes on within the company. Netflix is odd as they encourage their staff to look for jobs in other companies, they encourage them to interact with recruiters and to go for the job. “Their culture is “Which of my people, if they told me they were leaving, for a similar job at a peer company, would I fight hard to keep at Netflix (Hastings, 2009).” They believe in that: “The other people should get a generous severance now, so we can open a slot to try to find a star for that role (Hastings, 2009).” They do this as they do not want people to stay because they must, they do not want to be a company that holds an employee's back from spreading their wings is the crazy outlook is what makes Netflix transparent from the rest . it may not look like it from the outside looking in but Netflix does value relationships with their employees but their just colleges nothing more, they don't see employees like family they don't see them as employees and there is no give or take on that, because if an employee is not preforming to their expectation Netflix has no problem sending that employee on their way out with no questions asked or a goodbye. That is why before they even hire a potential upfront, they are honest and straight forward to what their expectations are and what happens if these expectations are not meet. So yes, Netflix does have a clear form of communication on how they operate and what is going in with the company good or bad they will communicate this with their employees . Netflix is that company that will not hold your hand they give their employees trust and freedom to make the right choices when it
