Social media has completely revolutionized the way multiple businesses market their products. Companies have different strategies based on their target audience and what works best for presenting their message. The business message I have created is to establish relationships of familiarity with customers by providing down-to-earth, entertaining content, and by allowing customers the ability to offer feedback. I believe this message is important because, in the social media world today, positive connections with your customers are extremely necessary for businesses. The more clients you can maintain good relationships with, the more exposure your business can receive. By providing entertaining content, customers will feel a sense of comfort in their relationship with my business and will likely remain loyal to the brand. I believe the social media platform that best fits my message is TikTok. With this platform, anyone can create a high-quality, creative video and there is a higher likelihood of virality (Macready, 2022). TikTok has a “For You” page, a curated algorithm that recommends specific content based on previous interactions you’ve had on the app (Wong, 2021). Posting business content could end up on the “For You” page of someone on the other side of the country, or the world, who may have never heard of my brand, but is now interested in purchasing something or interacting more with my profile. Customers who enjoy content on TikTok will be more likely to send those videos to other people, which will lead to more exposure (Macready, 2022). Posting engaging content on TikTok will achieve our goal of building relationships and likeliness from customers, which will also help to increase sales. Younger audiences tend to prefer a less serious and more unhinged form of social media marketing. Companies who have social media channels that are often informal and laid back usually gain more of a following because they receive more attention. A fantastic example of a successful business message presented on TikTok would be the DuoLingo account. DuoLingo is a mobile app that helps people learn foreign languages. The app encourages users to interact daily to keep up a learning streak in order. When a user is at risk of
1 losing their streak, the app sends a reminder notification. The internet ended up turning this into a joke and claimed that the app was threatening their users. Instead of changing the wording of their notifications, they ran with the joke and included more passive warnings. People started commenting on the company’s TikTok videos claiming they were at risk of losing their streak, and the account would jokingly respond with threatening remarks. When DuoLingo’s following increased from 100,000 to 1.7 million, the company learned that this type of marketing is successful and began focusing on making entertaining content their top priority, followed by their message (Gahan, 2021). Memes and social media trends are constantly changing, and when a company hangs onto something that the internet has moved on from, this can have a negative effect. DuoLingo took this into consideration and does a great job staying on top of trends, participating in them, and creating frequent content (Gahan, 2021). The company also interacts on TikTok videos having nothing to do with their brand, posting comments that attract attention from scrollers. This unserious form of marketing is what makes the brand so successful with their audiences and is another reason why TikTok is the perfect platform for my message. By following a similar marketing style, I believe my business message can be just as successful. A lot of companies have started following this new form of content creating, and it has been increasing their engagements with customers as well. I would know if my message was successful if my content goes viral, or if I see an increase of interactions in the comment section and the brand’s following. Being able to keep track of how many people share videos will help gauge any new engagements we would receive. It may not happen immediately overnight, but I have confidence that posting frequently on TikTok will successfully spread my business message.
