What I observed in the classroom was a mixture of students. In the class, there were grades 6
th
through 8
th
. There was a mixture of both male and female students. In the class, the teacher was working on classroom work with each student. This was tutoring time for the students. I watched as the teacher greeted the students at the beginning. The teacher reminded the students of the classroom rules. Once everyone got in their seat, the teacher asked all students to get out the work that they needed help with. The teacher then started to circle the room to assist.
I feel that the overall class went well. I liked the way the teacher was circling the room. I like the way the teacher reviews the rules of the class. By doing that I feel that gave the students a clear understanding of what the teacher wanted. Watching her engage with the students and taking the time to answer questions I felt was very important. The teacher was also able to work in small groups with students who were working on the same classroom work. The teacher also had students work with peers that needed help. This I felt gave the students a chance to work cooperatively.
The is not a lot, I would say that needs to be improved. I do feel that the teacher needs an extra person in the classroom with her. If another staff member came with her the students would be able to have many then one person to ask questions to. They would get help quicker. I feel the students would benefit from another teacher been in the classroom. With the extra staff in the room the class could have been split into. Each teacher would take a certain number of students to work with
Many instructional technologies were being used in the classroom. Each student had a laptop with them. Depending on the work that needed to be completed the students were using IXL, Reading Plus, or Edgenuity. IXL is used to help reinforce what was learned in the class that day. In IXL the lesson can be tailored to what they need to work on to close the gaps in the math. Reading Plus is used to help build reading fluency and comprehension. The students must read a passage and answer questions about the passage. Once they complete a target number the rate that the student reads at goes up. Edgenuity is used to help students who have failed a quarter they can recover that grade.
There are many things that I have gained from this class. Classroom management is key to any class. The teacher must have structure to start with. Reminding the students of the classroom rules and what is expected of them sets a clear standard for the behavior. Making sure that I move around the round will help answer questions that students have and let me see what students are working. This will also help with any behavior problem that happens. Groups students in group with the same work will help the students get peer help.
