When reviewing Adams case study it states that the child has been diagnosed with
ADHD that does interfere with his learning. Adam could be served with an IEP based
that his learning disability (Mentally disability) does comply with under the 13 disabilities
listed in the IDEA, also this disability he has does affect his education. Where he is in
danger of failing grade, he would constantly be distracting or annoying the rest of his
classmates. He has no friends in the classroom and he struggles with his social skills.
The IEP is a more strict plan that provides support for services that allows to teach
Adam in a different way using different techniques and accommodations for his learning
disability. The disability that he falls into according to the IDEA would be other health
impairment. ADHD impacts his executive function and his attention span where he
would get up off his seat every 10 minutes or more and has difficulty controlling his
emotions.
I believe Adam would be better off with an 504 plan since he has a mental impairment
that does not allow him to function at its fullest or more like remembering to turn in his
homework. He has excessive energy and has a hard time managing his seven classes
and organization. He has an IQ of 95 average, he is struggling in reading, math, and
writing below grade level on all of these subjects. In math he is about 1.5 grade levels
behind that would qualify for an IEP but since for reading and writing he is 1.2 grade
levels behind better qualify for an 504 plan. In order for a student to qualify for an IEP
they would have a low IQ and at least 1.5 grade levels behind. Plus Adam has no
physical disability that requires him to be placed in special education he can function in
a general classroom he just needs more support and accommodations within the
classroom.
