Question 1 Describe an instance where you used metacognition in the past. What did you learn?
Selected Answer: Metacognition to me has always been the most present when I am doing math or dealing with family conflicts. A good example I can give of me recognizing that I used metacognition in the past is that throughout grade school and partially through the middle I struggled with math. After years of struggle, I finally sat down and considered where there might be a disconnect, I discovered that the only real way I had tried it was how the teacher had presented it to me. I had never tried to step out of the box so in 8th grade, I did just that I did the homework, classwork, and quizzes using my knowledge of how to do the math and forming it to what worked best for me. It was successful. This is an example of how It took me challenging the way I thought gave me a greater outcome. Another example is that with any family conflicts, I like to put myself in the other person's shoes, I consider why the other party may feel that way in front of my thoughts and feelings. This always helps me determine the best way to go about certain situations. Edit: Metacognition has always been the most present when doing math. An example of recognizing the use of metacognition in the past was the decision to apply a personal way of thinking to math formulas taught in grade school. Math was difficult to understand until attempting problems using a method I understood. In grade school, math formulas often had added steps I did not understand. Learning to recognize where these unnecessary added steps were and simplify the problem helped me graduate high school with an A in math.
Question 2 What do you think metacognition has to do with creating and maintaining a growth mindset? Can you think of a time in your past where you succeeded by using metacognition?
Selected Answer: I think metacognition has to do with creating and maintaining a growth mindset in the fact that you recognizing your own mindset, what you do and do not do will help you not only develop new patterns that give you positive results but also when the results you get prove to be positive it shifts your mindset to know that doing things or thinking of things this certain way is progressive so you make it a habit. Any time in the past I have used metacognition it was mostly successful due to the fact that the way I was completing and thinking of the subject at hand was giving me negative results. Edit:
Metacognition involves creating and maintaining a growth mindset by recognizing a personal mindset. A person's choices will help not only develop new patterns that give positive results but receiving positive results helps build healthy habits for the future. For example, using metacognition in the past towards math formulas helped me complete challenging assignments successfully.
