ISB 201L – Numerology & Science [20 pts] – Sarah Poulos For this assignment you will be comparing and critiquing the characteristics of ‘good’ science versus pseudoscience (numerology). You will need to access the internet to watch short videos on Life Path Numbers and Numerology, and may need a few simple supplies to conduct a short experiment in Part 6. Follow the directions and complete the worksheet in the order in which the questions appear. Save your your completed work as a pdf and submit to the appropriate dropbox in D2L. Be sure that you are submitting your ‘completed’ worksheet and not a blank copy. The entire assignment will take 2-3 hours to complete and is due prior to the beginning of Lab 2 class (week of Jan. 22-26). * Please use a blue font for all of your answers!
This is very helpful when it comes to grading.
Disclaimer.
This activity is going to involve techniques used to identify your personality traits and life path based on numerology. The intent is not to discredit the insights or potential benefits one might obtain through numerology, but rather to highlight the characteristics of science versus pseudoscience. We all seek guidance in one form or another!
Part 1. What is Numerology?
Watch the short video and answer questions 1-4. https://youtu.be/aZmufsVG2sU
or search YouTube for ‘What is Numerology Jacobs Productions’. This particular video is 3:36 minutes long and published 9 months ago. 1.
What is numerology?
a.
Numerology is a study of numbers in your life. Numerology is the idea that the universe is a system, and once broken down we are left with the numbers. 2.
According to the video, what can numerology uncover for you?
a.
You can uncover information about the world and each individual person. 3.
According to the video, how does numerology work?
a.
Numerology usually requires a master numerologist to provide accuracy. It is the way numbers need to be interpreted properly. The idea behind numerology is that the cosmos in your life are usually affected by your birthday. It can provide insights about a person. 4.
What questions would you like to ask for more clarification?
a.
I think my biggest question would be how is numerology different from astrology? The two sound pretty much the same in my opinion. Part 2. Science is Testifiable & Reproduceable
The short video above mentioned ‘Life Path Numbers’. The claim with numerology is that your Life Path Number represents
your unique personality, talents, compatibility with others, career paths, and more. We will learn how to calculate your Life Path Number further down, but first we want to test whether we can predict (reproduce) what our Life Number will be. Read
through the personality traits associated with the Life Numbers 1-9 (below), and identify only one
you believe is most representative of you. Then create a hypothesis to test (i.e., My Life Path Number is…..). The purpose of first selecting the life path number that you feel ‘best’ matches your personality is to then be able to test whether the procedure can consistently
produce accurate results. In other words, we are conducting a sort of validation experiment of numerology. After selecting your Life Path Number, answer questions 5-7.
1- Independence, self-motivating and hard-working. Critical of themselves, good at multitasking and do not tolerate laziness.
2- Loyal and honest. They desire peace above all else, love to share their lives with other people, but so not like conflict. 3- Great communicators. Creative, energetic and sometimes exaggerate the truth.
4- Cerebral and relaxed. Seek security, highly organized, and live by the motto home is haven. 5- Free, fun-loving and adventurous. Need adventure otherwise things become overwhelming.
6- Natural born nurturers, have magnetic personalities and love to take care of others.
7- Cerebral and faithful. Have deep love of natural beauty.
8- Deeply emotional and honest. Strive to have financial security in their lives. 9- Natural leaders. Tend to take of everyone else around them, but often have a hard time speaking up when they themselves
need help. 5.
What do you suspect is going to be your Life Path Number, and what personality traits were most critical in arriving at this choice?
a.
I suspect that number 6 or number 2 will be my Life Path Number. I find that people enjoy being around me and I have been told that I have a magnetic personality. I am very outgoing and love to love. Due to that, I have natural nurturing within me as I love to do things. I also hate conflict and like keeping the peace. 6.
Hypothesis= a.
My Life Path Number is 6 because I am a natural born nurturer, have a magnetic personality, and love to take care of others.
7.
Prior to continuing, describe what challenges
you foresee when interpreting the results of this test?
a.
I think I have multiple traits mentioned throughout multiple numbers so I may not be a 6, which will be a little shocking for me, but I might also not be surprised at all.
Part 3. Supporting & Refuting Your Hypothesis
The video below will walk through how to calculate your Life Path Number, and then describe the personality traits for each of the numbers (also listed above). https://youtu.be/hRfYipURYC4
or search YouTube for ‘How to find your Life Path Number Numerology Secrets’. This video is 4:29 minutes long and published 6 years ago (this was the third video down when I searched it through youtube…..the one with the multi-colored eyeball!). In Q9 we ask whether your hypothesis was ‘supported’ or ‘refuted’. If your calculated Life Path Number is consistent with your hypothesis you can conclude that your hypothesis is supported. If not consistent, conclude that your hypothesis can be refuted (Note we avoid using the words right and wrong here). Answer questions 8-10.
8.
What is your calculated Life Path Number (show the math calculations)? a.
My calculated Life Path Number is 2. My birthday is September 26
th
, 2001, so that means that to calculate my number I would use my birth month, which is the ninth month, then add the two numbers of my birthday together which is eight, then add the two and the one from the year I was born which is three. Then I added those to get 20, which then I added together the two and the zero to end up with two. 9.
Was your hypothesis supported or refuted?
a.
My hypothesis was refuted! 10. Comment on why you believe it is important to first create a hypothesis and then calculate your
Life Path Number? a.
I think it is important because you can try and figure out for yourself before you conduct
the actual experiment, in this case I proved myself that I couldn’t figure it out without doing the math.
