Activity : Vehicle Racing Plan.
Curriculum Area : Math Lesson Plan
Answer the following questions:
1.
How did you choose this activity? How is this related to your long-term
project? If this is not related, why?
I chose this activity for my Math lesson plan as I observed children during dramatic play
talking about different shapes and connecting them with wheels, steering, headlights
and rear lights, body of the car.
2.
How will this plan support the current emerging curriculum/how is this an
exploration of a topic and not a lecture or one-time activity?
This plan is introduced to children by observing their interests, what they like to do and
revolves exclusively around children, hence this plan induces developments such as
Math skills such as learning geometric shapes, counting each shape and also
developing fine motor skills.
Each day children are exposed to shapes in their environment. They need to be able to
recognize shapes, verbalize what they see, and understand why they are there.
Children see a shape and make a connection. When they look at the wheel of a car,
they process that image as a circle, a shape they have learned to label.
3.
Using the California Foundations & Frameworks, Identify 2 possible
developmental objectives based on your observations of the children. These
are skills or concepts from 2 different domains of development that will be
practiced or introduced during this activity.
Give examples from your
observations to explain your choices.
Based on observation, children can develop two developmental domain skills.
Math skills :
When children use the cars they are working on early geometry skills, creativity,
comparison, spatial visualization and learning the properties of shapes.
Fine motor skills :
Moving the cars around the track is excellent for hand-eye coordination and developing
fine motor skills.
4.
Implementation Details: Describe the procedure so that someone else could
facilitate it.
A. Explain the actual procedure of your activity, including a list of the materials and
equipment required. What will you be doing during the activity; what will children be
doing?
Materials:
Printout sheets of vehicles such as cars, bus, trucks for each child and different pattern
blocks. Pattern block mats are simply printable mats with shape outlines on them for
pattern blocks. Kids take the triangles, squares, hexagons, trapezoids, circles, rhombi
and place them on the correct spot on the mat. Children would identify, describe, and
construct a variety of different shapes, including variations of a circle, triangle,
rectangle, square, and other shapes.
B. Describe the set-up, including furniture arrangement, # of children, timing etc.
This activity will take place in the classroom during activity time. There would be 3
tables with 4 children in each table. Each child would have a racing course and different
pattern blocks with different shapes for each table. For children that are new to pattern
blocks, I would consider setting out only the pattern blocks needed for the mat they are
working on. As they become familiar with them I would set out all the pattern blocks to
support planning, visual discrimination.
C. Describe how you might adapt your plan to meet individual children’s special needs
so all the children can participate.
I would use appropriate ways such as use of sign language and demonstrate the
materials for children with limited hearing, and encourage children with limited vision to
touch materials while explaining what they are.
E. List some open-ended questions you might ask children to provoke their thinking.
1. Tell me about your vehicle?
2.How fast is your vehicle going?
3. What are the shapes you have used for this vehicle?
4. What is the size of your vehicle
5.
How could you give the children the opportunity to revisit or extend their
experience the following days? Through materials, photos, displays, books?
Be specific…
