Directions: Read the information about the Praxis test below. When you are finished, click Mark as Done , and click Next to continue with the module. Praxis Information: What is the Praxis Exam? This guide will answer this question with info on test locations, dates and requirements, Praxis test lengths, exam prep advice, registration details and more. What Is the Praxis Test? The Praxis is a suite of exams that includes the Praxis Core tests, the Praxis Subject Assessments, and the Praxis Content Knowledge for Teaching (CKT) tests. The Praxis Core tests are usually used for entry into teacher preparation programs, while states use the Praxis Subject Assessments and CKT exams as part of the teacher certification/licensure process. Each state determines which Praxis exams are required (if any) for certification in specific subject areas and/or grade levels. For example, the exams required for becoming a middle school math teacher will vary from state to state. The Praxis Core tests are designed to test candidates' foundational reading, mathematics, and writing knowledge. The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to evaluate test takers' content knowledge and skills in a specific subject area. The Praxis CKT tests measure elementary school teachers' understanding of content and their ability to apply it in their classroom instruction. Here, we will learn more about this suite of exams. Praxis Format What's on the Praxis exam and the Praxis test length (in terms of the number of questions) will vary by the kind of Praxis exam. The Praxis Core includes a reading, writing, and mathematics test. The reading exam includes 56 questions. The writing exam has two sections; the first has 40 questions, while the second has two essay questions. The mathematics exam has 56 questions. Other than the essay questions, questions can be objective response questions, single-selection selected-response questions, numeric entry questions, or multiple-selection selected-response questions.

The Praxis CKT tests are available in four subject areas: reading and language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The reading and language arts test has 63 selected-response questions, the mathematics test has 52 selected-response questions, the science test has 47 selected-response questions, and the social studies exam has 60 selected-response questions. Praxis Test Length The Praxis test length by time also varies by the kind of Praxis exam. The Praxis Core has a different time limit for each subtest. For example, testers must complete the reading test in 85 minutes and the mathematics test must be finished in 90 minutes. The writing exam allows 40 minutes for the first section with selected-response questions and 60 minutes for the second section with essay questions. The Praxis Subject Assessments vary in length from one to four hours, depending on the exam. The Praxis CKT reading and language arts test allows 90 minutes, the mathematics test has to be completed in 85 minutes, the science test has 60 minutes, and the social studies test has 50 minutes. The level of difficulty for the Praxis exams will vary. For example, the Praxis Core tests may be slightly easier than Praxis Subject Assessments. This is because the Praxis Core exams are used for entry into teacher educator programs and test basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics versus the Praxis Subject Assessments that are used for teacher certification. However, no matter the exam, test-takers will need to properly prepare for their exam(s) to pass as soon as possible. The level of

How Is the Praxis Scored? The Praxis is scored differently depending on whether the exam is a selected-response exam, constructed-response exam, or a combination of the two kinds of questions. Scores are given in a range of 100 to 200. Therefore, answering 60% of the questions correctly will earn a score of 160. Selected-response exams award test takers one raw point for each correct answer; these are then added together for the total raw score. This total raw score is then scaled to account for different editions of the test. A computer scores selected-response exams. Human scorers score constructed-response exams. Each constructed-response question is scored by at least 2 scorers. Some scores are added together for a raw score, while others are weighted first and then added together for a raw score. Raw scores are then scaled for the different editions of the exam. Combination exams (those with both selected-response and constructed-response questions) will add the raw scores from both types of questions and then scale the score. What Is the Praxis Passing Rate? The Praxis passing rate varies by several different factors. For instance, most schools track their students' pass rates; there are also national pass rates. Pass rates also vary by Praxis exam and test year. In addition, states have various pass rates for each Praxis exam, as the passing score requirement may vary. For example, for the Praxis Education of Young Children (5024) exam, the national pass rate for the 2019-2020 test year was 76%, while the state pass rate in South Carolina was 84%. In general, pass rates increase for those test takers who take the exam multiple times after not passing their initial exam. Praxis Registration, Test Locations & Dates, and Fees/Waivers Registration for the Praxis exams is the same, no matter the type of Praxis exam. Candidates can register by phone if they plan to test within the United States, but this method costs an additional $35. Registration by mail is available, but test-takers need to allow up to three weeks to receive a voucher in the mail with directions for completing registration. Online registration is the easiest method, as test-takers can complete the process through their Praxis account. During registration, candidates select their exam, schedule their exam, and pay the required exam fee. Praxis test locations are available throughout the United States and abroad. Candidates can use the ETS online 'Find a Test Center' tool to search for available test centers by location. Many Praxis exams are also available for at-home, online testing. Most Praxis exams have test dates available every day throughout the year. Test takers can use the 'Find a Test Date' tool to see available test
