Explain constructivism in your own words. How students generate knowledge from experiences.
Think to the most recent time you taught (ideally, in a traditional classroom capacity). A.
What did you do? B.
What were students to learn? C.
Would you describe the teaching and learning experience to be guided by constructivism? Why or why not?
A.
Provided students with various numbers and facilitated conversations about ordering
them.
B.
Students were expected to turn and talk with partners about how to order various numbers students had from greatest to least or least to greatest and explain how they knew they were in the correct order.
C.
Yes, because I was scaffolding the conversation for students who were struggling with place value. Explain the 5E model. The 5E Model is the five stages of sequence for teaching and learning: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
Have you heard of the 5E model before? If so, explain. Yes, I have. We have followed the 5E model for a few years now for science. Our curriculum follows
the various experiences students will go through for learning concepts. We also utilize Stemsopes as
well to support the various stages in the model. Write a statement that you could send home to parents/guardians (hypothetically!) that explains how your (again, hypothetical) classroom will use “constructivist teaching.” Note, you should write this with an idealism perspective—as if there are no barriers to an ideal “constructivist” classroom. Dear parents,
I’d like to take some time to explain how my classroom is a constructivist teaching classroom. During this year, your child will participate in hands-on learning experiences as much as possible.
Providing them with the opportunities to experience these various concepts in both math and
science builds a greater foundation and understanding. This moves away from typical memorization of facts to an approach that encourages students to take ownership of their learning. Therefore, they gain a deeper appreciation in their learning and will generate more knowledge throughout this experience. By 1

taking this approach they will also form new connections, be able to expand on their learning, and share their findings. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
reach out to me! Thank you for your continued support this school year. Mrs. Woodall
Make a visual, like a classroom poster, that explains the 5E model to students (you pick the age/grade and math/science content). Be sure to add “I will”-type statements, which tell students the types of things they would do
at each of the stages/phases. Contextualize your poster in classroom content (as generally or specifically as you’d like). 2
