I have provided the assignment example turned in as a PDF with this written assignment because
I couldn’t figure out how to include it in this document. I used a free math worksheet from
https://www.education.com/worksheet/article/double-addition-subtraction/
1. General Curriculum Item:
Math Worksheet:
- 10 addition and subtraction problems mixed.
- Each problem involves two-digit numbers.
- Students are expected to solve each problem and write the answer in the provided space.
2. Adapted Item:
Modified Math Worksheet for a Student with a Disability:
- Simplified problems: Instead of two-digit numbers, use single-digit numbers for addition and
subtraction.
- Visual cues: Include pictures or drawings next to each problem to represent the mathematical
operations (e.g., a plus sign for addition and a minus sign for subtraction).
- Larger writing space: Provide ample space for the student to write their answers, making it
easier for them to manage their responses.
3. Written Reflection:
a. The student for whom the adapted assignment would be is a third-grade student with
dyscalculia, a specific learning disability in mathematics. This student may need help processing
numerical information and performing mathematical operations accurately.
b. The appropriate grade level for the activity is still third grade, but the content has been
adjusted to accommodate the student's learning needs.
c. I selected the adaptations based on research-backed strategies for supporting students with
dyscalculia. Simplifying the problems and incorporating visual cues can help the student better
understand the mathematical concepts and reduce cognitive load. Providing larger writing space
addresses potential fine motor challenges that the student may have.
d. To implement the adapted assignment, the teacher should introduce the worksheet to the
student, explaining the visual cues and ensuring the student understands how to solve each
problem. The teacher should also encourage the student to use any additional aids or strategies
that may support their understanding and completion of the assignment.
e. Through this assignment, I learned the importance of individualizing instruction to meet the
diverse needs of students in inclusive classrooms. Adapting curriculum materials requires careful
consideration of the student's strengths and challenges and knowledge of effective instructional
strategies for supporting students with disabilities. This experience reinforced the idea that all
students can access and engage in meaningful learning experiences with appropriate adaptations
and accommodations.
