How have you engaged in action research in your personal life or profession? Share how it did or did not result in finding a solution to a problem. In my professional life, I have been involved with action research when it came time to purchase a new science curriculum for our school. I am on the committee charged with this task and a lot of research went into the process that will eventually lead to the school purchasing a new curriculum that the committee felt was a good fit for our school. We first identified the problem that we did not have any science curriculum in some grades and incredibly out-of-date curriculums in other grades that were not used so concluded we needed something new (American College of Education, 2023). We decided what we needed from a new curriculum; we needed it to fit the school budget, meet the state standards, be able to fit into our science blocks, and be teacher-friendly (American College of Education, 2023). We looked at the different science curriculums out there and compiled a list. Next week, we looked at what the curriculum covered and how it lined up with our standards. We also looked at pricing and the continual cost of the curriculum with the yearly purchases that would need to be made. We also looked at how long the curriculum was as we have a time crunch in our academic schedule. We also looked at what other schools used and looked for opinions from them. We compiled a list of pros and cons for each curriculum and narrowed it down to two. We now are piloting the two different curricula until the end of the school year when we will make our final decision based on data collected by the teachers piloting (American College of Education, 2023). Thinking about a problem, issue, concern, or need in your workplace, why would you consider action research? Point out how the steps in an action research proposal could be beneficial for finding a solution to the problem, issue, concern, or need. When thinking about problems that come up in the workplace I think it’s important to consider action research. Action research is a way to solve the problem rather than letting it get worse or putting a bandaid on it without fully understanding why the problem exists and what can be done to solve it (American College of Education, 2023). The first step is to define the problem, this makes sure that the problem isn’t ignored but instead is taken head-on (American College of Education, 2023). Next, it is important to to form a hypothesis of how to fix it based on collecting observations and looking at literature, so it is well thought out (American College of Education, 2023). Following that, whoever is working on the identified problem will find ideas to solve it (American College of Education, 2023). Once ideas are chosen then they can start to be used in action steps (American College of Education, 2023). As the action steps are implemented they need to be continuously thought about and go through the process over and over as it is a cycle (American College of Education, 2023). Citations
