Unit 4 UNIT 4: METRIC MEASUREMENT, DOSAGE CALCULATION AND GRAPHING Summer 2023 Study Guide. This one will really work best if you print this out. You will want to record data on this, and you will graph as well. Remember handwriting, using colors, speaking out loud, drawing your diagrams really help. You can also use abbreviations and sentence fragments so long as you know what you are talking about. Part 1 Mass 1. The base unit for mass is the Grams 2. Watch the video on the use of an electronic balance. Answer the following questions A. The first step was: Turn on the power button B. What did he physically do to the scale do after he added the weigh boat? : pressed zero C. What is the term for what he did?: set the balance to zero D. What did he say to do with the excess material he had added to the weigh boat but did not need? : To not return to the bottle, E. What was the final mass of the material in the weigh boat? Record it in the table below question 5. 3. The electronic scale interactive link now takes you to a video that used to an interactive and then was in French, but now it is in English. Next term, who knows? Maybe it will go back to being an interactive. Start the video. Fast forward until you get to this image. You should recognize what is going on, since you just watched the previous video. Answer the questions below. a. Which item has to be tared? A liquid (water) b. What is the mass of the water? 53.4g c. Keep watching. What was the mass of the beaker? ENTER THIS VALUE in the table. - 49.1 d. What would have happened if the scale had not been tared after the beaker was placed on the scale? – it would include the beakers weight and the waters weight 1
Unit 4 4. Go to the next activity in the presentation to weigh the sheep parts. Record the results in the table. 5. For all the values you have recorded, do the required conversions. The mass of selected items Mass in Conventional Notation Mass in Scientific Notation Mass converted from grams to indicated unit & in Scientific Notation Mass of white powder from first video in question #2 5.84g 5.84 x 10^0 5840000 µg 5.84 x 10^6 Mass of water from “interactive” In question #3 that is now a video that is not in French anymore. Water: 53.4g Beaker: 49.1g Water: 5.34 x 10^1 Beaker: 4.91 x 10^1 Water: 5340cg 5.34 x 10^3 cg Beaker: 4910 cg 4.91 x 10^3 Brain 137.0g 1.37 x 10^2 0.137 kg 1.37 x 10^-1kg Heart 219.0g 2.19 x 10^2 0.219 kg 2.19 x 10^5 mg There is a table with SOME, but NOT ALL of the results, in the presentation. 6. Record the body mass from the physician’s scale video (in presentation) in this table. Turn this table in. Body Mass from video lbs Kg g and scientific notation First practice weight 144 1/4 65.5 kg 65500 6.55 x 10^4 g Second practice weight 199 3/4 90.7 kg 90700g 9.1 x 10^4 g 7. Name the measuring tool that you will used to make the following types of metric measurements: 2
Unit 4 a. The mass of a quarter: Electronic scale b. The mass of a human: Physicians scale, bathroom scale 8. What weight is depicted here? (You can view the presentation or stretch this picture to see better, if you need to.) 231 lbs Part 2 Measuring Length and Volume Measuring length Take any notes you need. 1. The base unit for length is: meters 2. The cm value (the height of the patient) this scale is reading in the photo in the content file is 166 cm 3. Fill in data from the video. Height from Physician's Floor Scale. Person 1 (at 5:26 in video) Person 2 (at 6:50 in video) Height (cm) 161.5 cm 194.5 cm Convert Height to m 1.62 m 1.95 m 3
Unit 4 4. Using a metric ruler a. Watch the metric ruler video. b. What is the length of the second line he measures? i. In cm: 4.7cm ii. In mm: 47 5. Collect Data: Measure the length of your ulna. Length of your ulna (and it cannot be the same as mine). You (NOT 26cm) Someone else’s ulna (optional)(not 26cm) Ulna length in centimeters (cm) (in Conventional Notation) 24cm 25cm Write length in cm (in Scientific Notation) 2.4 x 10^1 cm 2.5 x 10^1 cm Convert ulna length to meters (m) 0.24m 0.25m Convert ulna length to decimeters (dm) 2.4dm 2.5dm 4. Use a large paper clip and small metric ruler to answer the following questions. a. What is the smallest increment of the metric ruler? (1 m, 1 cm, or 1 mm) 1mm b. How thick is the wire of a large paper clip, in mm? 1mm c. What is the width, from side to side, of a jumbo paper clip, in mm and cm? 1cm, 10mm d. If 10 jumbo paper clips were placed side by side, how many cm and dm would that be? i. cm 10cm ii. dm 1dm e. Measure one other item: List it: usbc charger i. Cm: 0.84 4
Unit 4 ii. mm: 8.4 Metric Temperature Take any notes you need. 1. If you are sick and your temperature is higher than normal, you have a Fever. 2. Scientists and health professionals typically use the Celsius scale (°C) to measure temperature. On this scale, water freezes at 0 C and boils at 100 C, at sea level. 3. On the Fahrenheit scale (°F), water freezes at 32 F and boils at 212 F, at sea level. 4. Write down the formulas to convert a. C to F - F=(0C x 9/5) + 32 b. F to C - C=(F – 32) x 5/9 5. Watch the video on how to read the thermometers. Take at least 1 sentence of notes. - They all use negative numbers for very cold temperatiures. 6. Look at the photos in the presentation. “Collect” the data. a. What is the temperature of boiling water in degrees C? 100 Which picture? A b. At what temperature does water freeze in degrees C? 0 Which picture? C c. Which picture(s) shows a cold day? i. What is/are the temperature(s) in degrees C? -17C , 0C d. Hot day? _______ i. What is/are the temperature(s) in degrees C? 40C 5
Unit 4 7. Complete the table using information from the photos in the presentation and the data you collect at home. If your data is in degrees F, convert that to degrees C. For the data collected in degrees C, convert to degrees F. Temperature measurements in °C and °F. Temperature in your house Hot day Temperature Ice Temperature Boiling water Temperature Your Body Temp. Another person’s Body Temp. °C 22.222 40 0 100 36.72 37.05 °F 72 104 32 212 98.1 98.7 8. Is your body temperature measurement what you expected? - Sort of 9. What might contribute to deviations in expected body temperature? - Illness, time of day, gender 10. A child’s forehead seems hot to you. You take their temperature and find it to be 37°C. Should you be concerned? - No 11. Your cookbook instructs you to set the oven at 400°F to cook the chicken, but your oven only displays Celsius. What temperature should you set your oven to, in o C? - 204.4 Volume Measurement 1. The base unit of volume is the Liter 2. A cubic centimeter of water is 1 cc. How much does this weigh? 1g 3. How many cc’s is one ml of water? 1cc 4. If you needed to give a horse 10 ml of banamine, a pain killer, how many ccs would you give? 10cc 6
