Lesson Activity
Constructing a Parallel line
This activity will help you meet this educational goal:
You will use geometry software to make a formal geometric construction.
Directions
Read the instructions for this self-checked activity. Type in your response to the
question and check your answer.
Activity
Use GeoGebra to construct parallel lines by completing each part of this activity. For
help, watch these GeoGebra videos about points, lines, and angles and
measurement tools .
Part A
Complete these steps in the GeoGebra activity.
Draw point D close to the middle of line , then draw a line through points C
and D.
Draw a circle centered at D with a radius of 1, which intersects line at two
points. Label the point of intersection closest to point B as point E.
Circle D intersects line in two places. Label the point of intersection that is
closest to point C as point F.
Draw a line through points E and F.
Draw a circle centered at C with a radius of 1, which intersects line at two
points. Label the point of intersection farthest from point D as point G.
Measure line segment , then create a circle centered at point G with a radius
equal to the length of line segment .
Label the point where circle G intersects circle C in the interior of as point
H.
Draw line , which is parallel to line segment AB.
Take a screenshot of your work, and paste it in the box.

Part B
Consider your construction from part A. What do you think is the relationship
between a pair of angles that are on the same side of transversal and with both
angles between the parallel lines? Use the measurement tools to determine whether
your conjecture is correct. Type your answer in the box.
