QUESTION 1 What is the temperature of the water once it has reached equilibrium with the air? Transfer this number to the appropriate column in Table 1. 73° F = 22.78° C Place the plastic tube into the water. QUESTION 2 What is the frequency of the tuning fork? (This should be printed on the fork). Transfer this frequency to Table 1. 384 Hz QUESTION 3 What is the distance that results in the loudest sound? 22 cm QUESTION 4 What is the calculated wavelength? (Transfer this number to Table 1) Wavelength= 4(L+0.3d)= 4(.22+.3(.02))=.904 QUESTION 5 What is the estimated measurement of the speed of sound? (Transfer this number to Table 1). v=wavelength * f=.904 * 384 Hz=347.136 QUESTION 6 What is the theoretical speed of sound? (Transfer your number to Table 1). 343.67 QUESTION 7 Calculate the % of error between the experimentally estimated and the calculated speed of sound. Percent error = (347.136-343.67)/343.67 * 100=1.01% QUESTION 8 Are you satisfied with your % of error that you achieved in this experiment? If you, you may want to repeat this experiment with a different water recipient, etc. until you obtain numbers with which you are satisfied. I think that I could have let the water sit out a little longer and get closer to room temperature but overall I am satisfied with the results of this lab. The purpose of this lab experiment is to measure the speed of sound using a tuning fork. This experiment was really easy compared to the last experiment. It would have been better to let the water sit out a little longer like I mentioned in question 8. Copyright © 2017 by Thomas Edison State University.
