Dq1 How can teachers facilitate a learning environment that balances foundational knowledge with rigor while nurturing early learners to have a positive attitude towards math? As teachers, we can facilitate a learning environment that balances foundational knowledge with rigor while nurturing a positive attitude towards math in early learners by combining instructional strategies and classroom management techniques. An instructional strategy that we can use is incorporating hands-on activities and manipulatives to enhance students' understanding of mathematical concepts. As early childhood teachers, we set the foundation for our students' education (Dinsmoor, 2022). We want them to realize math is a puzzle, and just like language, it surrounds us and is crucial to our development. Making math fun and tangible for them is vital. So, having manipulatives, which serve as a visual representation, makes it possible for them to understand math. Young learners are at the concrete math stage, needing visuals to understand concepts (Dinsmoor, 2022). Classroom management is essential for the ultimate learning environment. Children need clear expectations of what behavior is expected of them. Developing classroom rules with the children increases their accountability when following them. Dq2 Take a stance either for or against traditional math instruction in early childhood. What are the factors to consider for its usefulness? Provide evidence to support your position. I advocate for inquiry-based math instruction over traditional methods. This approach allows students to learn hands-on and increases their knowledge by encouraging them to think critically and comprehend concepts (Ferguson, 2010). Additionally, hands-on learning is a multi-sensory experience that benefits students with exceptionalities (Morin, n.d.). For example, it is easier for a student to understand operations such as addition with manipulatives, which they can see, touch, and count aloud, than seeing a teacher adding numbers on a board. By involving various senses, students can make connections, allowing them to grasp concepts. When I think of traditional math instruction, I connect it to students sitting at their desks memorizing information and trying to understand abstract concepts. Inquiry-based instruction requires students to learn through investigation and questioning, thereby giving them a deeper understanding of the concepts (Ferguson, 2010). References Ferguson, K.
