Accommodations versus Modifications Assignment Grades 6-12 Directions : It is important to understand the differences between accommodations and modifications when working with students with special learning needs. Accommodations are changes made to instructions or testing procedures, so that a child can fully access the curriculum and demonstrate knowledge. However, modifications are changes made to the instructions or curriculum which alters the student performance expectations. Step One – Please review the following scenarios and explain in three sentences whether the change is an accommodation or modification (be sure to fully justify your response). Step Two – After doing some research online or in your textbook. Please generate a graphic organizer that highlights three classroom accommodations and three modifications that can be used in a secondary classroom. 1. A sign language interpreter accompanies Jenny, who is hearing impaired, to each of her six class periods in middle school and relays all the information her teachers share. Three modifications are making sure they all the materials, if needed make shorter assignments, and making easier assignments. These are just some of the ideas I would have taken into consideration regarding hearing impairment. 2. Stephanie has a learning disability and struggles with taking detailed notes. Her teacher provides her with a chapter outline to summarize key findings before each new unit. Three accommodations I would choose to make a change for are making sure they get extended time, frequent breaks, and captioned media. All of these are important because they will help the student in the classroom environment when learning. Since the student has a learning disability you must make sure that when it comes to new lessons you have a guide of notes ready for them. 3. Casey loves to tell stories but struggles with getting his thoughts on paper. The class is required to draft a two-page essay on a person who has influenced them, but Casey only must write two paragraphs for his essay. Three modifications I would make sure to have for Casey is like Jenny with the shorter assignment, making it easier for Casey, and give Casey a topic. I personally would have a topic for Casey to get ideas from so they can write and have it one page instead since the two-page mark is difficult. 4. Jacob is learning about characterization, and the changes that characters undergo throughout a fictional story. The class is required to read a seven-chapter novel that features a dynamic lead character. Three accommodations I would have for Jacob is reading with him, breaking down the chapters, and having a character chart beside him with a description of each of them. With Jacob having difficulty reading and not being in the level he is supposed to be is hard so I
However, Jacob is not reading at grade level, so his teacher assigns him an abridged and easier version of the same text. liked how I noticed that the teacher gave him an easier text to break the material down so he can still participate in the assignment. 5. Tony has recently been diagnosed with ASD and has issues focusing for long periods of time. His class is doing a research project for the next two weeks on marine life, and their final project will be due at the end of the 10 class periods. Tony’s teacher breaks the research project into smaller segments and has him turn in each segment daily to check his progress. The accommodation I would have for Tony would be having to be given an easier project, extended time if needed, and clear notes about the project. When you have ASD, and you get diagnosed you must learn how to adapt to the new lifestyle and when you have school learning on top of that you need to have assignments broken down so you can apply your best foot forward. I liked how the teacher made it easier for him and doing daily heck-ins because you want what is best for him and that will help him. 6. Sarah’s class is working on long divisions, with two-digit divisors. Sarah qualifies for special education services by having a deficit in math reasoning and math calculations. Sarah is still working on multiplication facts, and therefore she gets an alternate math test with different problems from the rest of her peers. Three modifications I would for Sarah are making sure the materials were broken down for him before hand, shorter test, and a calculator. This will help her on the exam to break down the math calculations. I liked how the teacher already is making a different exam for her because Sarah would need to have an easier exam since she has accommodations that are being met.
