Take simple shapes that are small and make larger shapes out of them.
Objectives
Students will understand
How to make larger shapes with and from small shapes.
Students will know
Names of shapes
How form new shapes from small shapes
Students will be able to
Identify different by sight
Identify the name the new large shapes they formed using small shapes
Assessment Plan
Give out large paper cutouts of different shapes.
With the cuts out have the students individually go
around the classroom and find the shape of the cutout within the classroom. Then put students in
pairs and have them cut out rand shapes from paper. With the cuts out have them work together to
try and make new shapes.
Summative: By calling out the name of different types of shapes have students hold up the
shape. Give each student a handful of plastic shape tiles. With shapes tiles have them recreate
a larger scale size of the shape you call out.
Procedure
1.
Review previously learned material
Give each student a handful of plastic shape tiles. With shapes tiles have them recreate a larger
scale size of the shape you call out
2.
State Objectives of the Lesson
Understanding how to make shapes within shapes
3. New Material
Read “Shapes, Shapes, Shapes” by Tana Hoban.
On Chart paper pad or white board or smart board draw two of the same shape. Have students
name the shape and number is sides it has.
3
Show student how with two of the same shape can create a new shape.
Do multiple examples using different shapes
4. Guided practice
.
Give each student a handful of plastic shape tiles. With shapes tiles have them recreate a
larger scale size of the shape you call out
Give hand out of drawn shape. Have students use the small shape pieces to fill I the drawn
shape on the hand given to them. Putting them in groups will allow kids to work on multiple
shapes at a time and have more piece shapes to use.
5. Independent practice
Have every student drawn a picture on a full size sheet of paper using shapes. Once they have
the picture have them each fill in the picture with shape tiles. This will show the students how
shapes are useful in realty and the world to make real things and objects.

Assessment Plan
Formative- Ask student to express their own meaning of each vocab word. What and how they
are using with measurement.
Summative
Give each a student a popsicle sticks or straw or any straight edge object without any
measurements on it and a worksheet. On the worksheet will be listed items in the class they
should go a measure. With each item listed on the sheet have word selections for them to
mark based on the object. Long, short, tall, wide
Procedure
1.
Make a word association list using the word MEASURMENT
Whiles watching a movie about tall, short, big and little have the children list the items that
are said in the movie associated with each measurement. After completing the work sheet and
watching the film have a blank space on the sheet and have the students write a down the
name the something and state its statue of measurement.

With the worksheet done and complete. Put the kids in groups and each group work
together to groups that are alike in another way besides just the way it measures.
Using a chalk board, felt or magnet board that is divided in to two halves. One side taller the
other shorter Have the students one at a time grab picture of something place it on the side
they believe the object will stand next to me(teacher)
3. Categorize the groups by specific definition
Using building blocks, mega blocks, Lego’s etc. have the student build a building. Then have
the students walk around every structure and compare the structure to themselves.
4.Regroup the items individually
Group students into pair and have each group categorize pictures based on four categories
5. Put together all the information and summarize the data
Within a class discussion including the teacher; discuss the differences between to
