You may discuss the lab report with your lab group members but all answers must be your own. 1. Find the scientific names of your five favorite plant foods. Simply search ‘YOUR FOOD scientific name’ (i.e. ‘almond scientific name’ or ‘tomato scientific name’ ) in Google. Food #1: Almond Prunus dulcis Food #2: Tomato Solanum lycopersicum Food #3: Banana Musa acuminata Food #4: Spinach Spinacia oleracea Food #5: Cherry Prunus avium 2. Choose a physical trait which all of your plants share and compare this trait in each of your plants. Which physical trait did you use? How does this trait differ between your plants? Almond trees produce beautiful pink or white flowers with five petals. They are similar in appearance to cherry blossoms. Tomato plants produce small, yellow, star-shaped flowers with five petals. These flowers are typically not very showy. Banana plants have large, pendulous flowers in shades of yellow, pink, or red. These flowers are distinctly different from the typical flower shape and are often hidden within the large banana bunch. Spinach plants produce small, hidden flowers with greenish-yellow to greenish-white color. They are not typically the focus of cultivation since spinach is grown for its leaves. Cherry flowers have five petals that can be white or light pink in color.
3. Based on the physical trait that you selected. Which two foods do you think will be most closely related? Why? Based on the physical trait of flower structure, the two plant foods that appear to be most closely related are almond and cherry. Both almond and cherry trees produce flowers with similar appearances, having five petals and being pink or white. These similarities in flower structure 4. Which two foods do you think will be least closely related? Why? Bananas and almonds are likely the least closely related among the mentioned foods. Bananas feature large, hanging, and uniquely shaped flowers that are often hidden within the banana bunch and almonds produce pink or white flowers with a more common and recognizable structure, akin to cherry blossoms. These notable differences in flower structure suggest that bananas and almonds are less closely related compared to the other foods. 5. Paste a screenshot of your phylogenetic tree here.
