7-1 Discussion: Taking the First Step towards Change
Issue: A patient has been experiencing severe neck discomfort and tingling sensations in her
right hand which travels up her arm; she tries to shake it off, but nothing she does seems to help.
Logical Consequence: Her only option is to visit her physician to determine whether she can
resolve her issue.
Dialogue:
Doctor: Good Afternoon. Shronda? How are you?
Me: I’m well.
Doctor: What brings you in today?
Me: Well Doctor, I’ve been experiencing neck pain and tingle in my right hand.
Doctor: How long has this been going on?
Me: I have been having neck pain for quite some time ever since my thyroid surgery in May 2017 and I thought
the surgery fixed the neck pain, and the tingle in my right hand and the whole part of my arm has been going on
about 5 months not sure what could be causing me to feel this way.
Doctor: Can you show me where the pain is in your neck?
Me: It’s right here, between my neck and shoulder blade. Doctor: Does that hurt?
Me: No, it’s constantly pain that’s been going on since my thyroid surgery.
Doctor: Okay, Shronda, what about the tingle in your right hand that goes up your arm.
Me: Yes, doctor, I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's annoying, it just tingles, and nothing I do makes it go away.
Doctor: Okay, Shronda. In addition to prescribing pain medication for your neck, I'm going to write some
prescriptions for x-rays of your neck and Electromyography (EMG), which is a test used to detect neuromuscular
anomalies for the tingling in your right hand. Do you need anything else at this time?
Me: Yes, doctor. I need refills on all my regular medications.
Doctor: Okay, Mrs. Cole. I’ll be right back. Me: Okay, Doctor.
Doctor: Okay, Shronda I've already called in your prescription for all of your other medications, and here is the
prescription for your x-ray. Make sure to get your x-ray and your Electromyography taken care of so that you can
receive your results within five days, the sooner the better Shronda.
Me: Okay Doctor, I’m leaving here now to have those orders done.
Doctor: Okay, Shronda be sure to take your medication for your neck pain and I’ll call you when I receive your
results. Me: Okay, Doctor. Doctor: Okay, Shronda, feel better until I call you with your results. Me: Okay, Bye, Doctor.

Tanya,
I like your dialogue discussion something that happens in real life. Yes, we sometimes have regrets of things we don’t ‘have control over when we’re feeling all down and out, but sometimes we have to think about our bills when we know it’s going to cause us to be evicted,
but talking to our landlord seeing what payment plan they can help us out may be a good idea.
I myself be stressed and feeling sad and do things that may cause me to think afterwards asking myself why did I do that I just be beating myself up about it, but I pray to god and makes a way everytime.
I like how you discussed a real-world event in for your dialogue. Yes, there are times when we feel hopeless and regret decisions we can't change, but there are also instances when we have to consider paying our bills even though we know it may result in eviction. In these situations, speaking with our landlord to see what kind of payment arrangement they can offer
us may be a smart idea. When I'm anxious or depressed, I tend to act in ways that make me second-guess myself and beat myself up. However, when I pray to God, he always provides a solution.
