PHE 690 Discussion Post 1-1 Hello class, My name is Ashley Lunsford, and I am pursuing my Master’s in public health to aid in my career goal of becoming an epidemiologist in my community. I have always dreamed of working in medicine somehow and am passionate about preventable diseases and infection prevention. The field of public health was one I stumbled into during the Covid-19 pandemic, when I was hired to work on surveillance and intervention efforts at my local health and human services. I currently reside within the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas and work with Dallas County Health and Human Services. Following graduation, I plan to continue my work with Dallas County Health and Human Services and advance into a more senior role to continue my work in improving health outcomes for my local community. Community Identification Currently, I reside within Dallas County, Texas which has a large population of 2.6 million people (United, 2022). Dallas County spans 873 square miles of land, situated in north Texas (United, 2022). Around 14% of people who reside within Dallas County are living in poverty and 21.5% of residents within Dallas County do not have health insurance (United, 2022). Currently, Dallas County is ranked 52 out of 244 ranked counties in Texas, making it a rather healthy county compared to others in the state (County, 2023). Organizations: Dallas County Health and Human Services Dallas County Health and Human Services is located in Dallas, Texas and is the county’s health department. American Heart Association The American Heart Association (AHA) is a national organization in the United States with a branch in Dallas, Texas.
