Module Seven Discussion: Models of Service Delivery
In your textbook, you read about the medical, public health, and human services model of service delivery. In this discussion, compare and contrast the different models of delivery. Explain the differences between the three service delivery models. The medical, public heath, and human services models are all similar in that they have goals of addressing the problem and providing help for their clients. They differ in how the problem is viewed, who their specific client type is, and the type of delivery method in which care is provided. “All three models are used to deliver services today, and depending on the problem, an integration do all three models may be most effective” (Woodside & McClam, 2019,
p. 136).
The medical model was developed by the medical profession, beginning with the field of psychiatry. “It assumes that mental disorders are diseases or illnesses that impair an individual’s ability to function” (Woodside & McClam, 2019, p. 137). In this model, it is believed that an illness can be treated with medication, physical therapy, or through laboratory studies. The patient receives care in a hospital or medical office setting from a trained professional. Emphasis is placed on the individual in the medical model. Their problem is considered to be a disease or sickness and the individual depends on their health provider to prescribe an appropriate treatment for whatever sickness they have (Woodside & McClam, 2019, p. 137).
“The evolution of public health as we know it today began with the understanding that communicable diseases, poor sanitation, and lack of medical knowledge have been community health problems since ancient times” (Woodside & McClam, 2019, p. 143). The public health model is similar to the medical model in diagnosis and treatment process, but differs in its type
of client and modes of delivering treatment to them. There is more emphasis placed on group populations, which could be based on geography, types of problems, or age (Woodside & McClam, 2019, p. 142). Along with a medical diagnosis or prescription, educating and advocating for a variety of groups are used as methods of treatment. In the public health model, environmental and social pressure factor in as part of the problem, and treatment can occur in an office or in the community.
The human services model differs the most from the other two. It views problems as an
expected, necessary part of everyday life and problems may be internal, environmental, or interpersonal (Woodside & McClam, 2019, p. 147). Clients are considered to be individuals, families, groups, and the environment. This model is looks at interactions between the individual and the environment, emphasizes the need for balance between them, and focuses on
the interpersonal and environment conflicts that may result from the problem (Woodside & McClam, 2019, p. 147). “The primary method of treatment or service is problem solving, a process focused on the here and now that maximizes the identification and use of client strengths” (Woodside & McClam, 2019, p. 149). Problems should be identified correctly, otherwise a client may become frustrated and begin to question the usefulness of the helper. For those reasons, human service professionals invest time in their relationship with each client, learn about their situations and experiences, and help them to identify their own strengths. In the human services model, clients may be treated in an office, agency, or the community.
