Dr. Lynn Sikorski is an osteopathic dermatologist and she knew she wanted to pursue medicine since the 8th grade. Her dad was a DO family doctor and she immediately knew she wanted to be a doctor. She took many AP classes in high school to further her interests and joined MSU COM for medical school. She was placed with PA and nursing students which was not normal for the medical track. She loved MSUCOM because no one was left behind especially since all classes were pass/fail and they had a 70% passing average. Some other reasons why she loved it so much was because everyone was there for each other like sharing study materials and having a close knit community. For residency in dermatology, it is three year and when she was in school, it was either extremely bad or really good. However, she did one year of family medicine before dermatology since she couldn't get a spot in dermatology. After residency, she worked for someone in their practice for 2.5 years and continued to open her own practice which she had for 22 years. After residency, she was getting really involved with MSUCOM but later became the program director at Beaumont for the dermatology resident program for 10 years. She continued to talk about the benefits and drawbacks of being an osteopathic doctor. One of the positives would include that it is a small program which means that it is much more supportive. One of the negatives would be that DO’s are a minority since only 25% of medical students are osteopathic students. In general, dermatology is the study and treatment of diseases of the hair, skin, and nails. The education would be 4 years of medical school, 1 year of transitional rotations, and 2 years of dermatology fellowship. We touch upon skin cancer and how to avoid it as well as the different types. I really enjoyed this session since in middle school, I wanted to be a dermatologist and I think it was great to learn more about it since I never really got the chance to. The presenter was trying to make it interactive and the case studies were so intriguing which allowed us to understand the way a dermatologist would think in different scenarios.
