Summary of facts from article(s): ***As the article was a general summary of surgery throughout history, my focus pertained to the “Classical times” section. The summarized information came from ~350 words of the article. At the time of the Roman Empire, medicine reached new peaks. This is known due to the surviving documentation of a physician named Aulus Cornelius Celsus who detailed surgical procedures. Discussions of treating fractures, plastic operations, abdominal paracentesis, and cancer-reducing mastectomies were described among other things, demonstrating a knowledge and practice of procedures still used in some form today. Another important person in the history of Roman medicine was a Greek physician named Galen. He also contributed to the development of medical practice and records indicate that he dealt with various physiological concerns some of which were perforated lungs and conditions needing tracheostomies. These procedures were quite technical and reveal the level of advancement in Roman medicine as it is expected that various “centers” across the Empire were conducting these procedures. The practice of medicine and surgery was still limited by the lack of analgesia. The Roman Empire had not incorporated opiates into medicine at this time like those in other parts of the world—like China—had. The absence of any kind of anesthesia kept surgery from becoming too complex at this time as patients were unable to undergo long procedures. One final contributor to Roman medicine at this time was Antyllus. His contribution mostly surrounds the symptoms and treatment of aneurysms. However, he also contributed to the discussions of plastic surgery. It is clear that physicians during the Roman empire were considering medical practices for treating problems but also for what we would call today “elective surgeries”. Aspect of topic which would be interesting for future research: For future research, it would be interesting to do specific research on both Galen and Cornelius Celsus. They may be two physicians I choose to deeply explore for their impact on medicine at this time. Additionally, it would be interesting to investigate surgical procedures further. For example, exploring what surgeries were most commonly done, success rates, sanitation practices (if there were any), and where/how doctors were trained.
