Answer #1: A Medical Liaison team is extremely important to a pharmaceutical company, as medical science liaisons (MSLs) have the scientific and clinical knowledge to educate others not familiar with the company’s drug or therapeutic. For instance, they are often referred to as the “medical” face of the organization (Crowley-Nowick & Smith, 2015). They are responsible for maintaining relationships between the company and physicians to ensure the product’s success. During clinical trials, MSLs are educating themselves on the drug’s safety and efficacy, as well as preparing to relay this information to healthcare professionals after the product launch. For example, consulting firm Zipher Medical Affairs provided a four-person on-demand MSL team to an oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company six months before product launch (Crowley-Nowick & Smith, 2015). The team’s job was to educate healthcare professionals about the rare state of the disease upon drug approval and establish the company’s credibility, as it was fairly new. As a result, the product launch was highly successful. Medical liaisons continue to interact with physicians even after product launch, so physicians may consider new treatments for their patients. Overall, a Medical Liaison team is crucial to a biotechnology company during clinical trials and before/after product launch. Reference Crowley-Nowick, P., & Smith, J. (2015, November 3). Since MSLs have a strong educational background in science and in the medical field, KOLs find them more credible and actually prefer to communicate with them, compared to pharmaceutical sales and marketing teams (Dyer, 2012). This is extremely important, as KOLs such as physicians just want to have a conversation about science without getting into promotional details. For example, a study conducted in 2011 from Thought Leader Select (a KOL strategy and research firm) revealed that 70% of key opinion leaders preferred to contact industry executives or MSLs (Dyer, 2012). Medical science liaisons educate key opinion leaders on the science behind their drug, providing an unbiased source of information. Furthermore, MSLs are an integral part of a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company, since they maintain relationships with key opinion leaders, leading to more product engagement and a higher rate of product success. They have the experience and knowledge to boost a product’s credibility, based on their extensive, renowned research. Key opinion leaders have a credible reputation, so their approval of a drug/product may influence consumers into buying (Lucas, 2020). Some examples of key opinion leaders in the medical field could be physicians that have numerous publications or have spoken at many conferences. Key opinion leaders are well known in their field and can therefore bring up a product’s reputation. Reference Lucas, P. (2020, October 15). Key opinion leaders . Answer #4: I believe that people in high-level executive positions lead Med Affairs. For example, according to TriNet Pharma (2020), some positions may include the Medical Affairs Vice President, Medical Affairs Manager, Medical Director, Head of Medical Affairs, Director of Medical Affairs, or Medical Information Officer. These executives are responsible for bridging communication between the company (focused on research) and the business side to ensure the drug’s success. These professionals draft proposals for clinical trials and compose scientific strategies for product publication. Since Med Affairs is a significant part of a drug’s success, it only makes sense that high-level executives such as directors or presidents are in charge of Med Affairs. Reference TriNet Pharma.
