1.
Why is it important to consider the age when a child is exposed to domestic
violence?
It is important to consider the age when a child is exposed to domestic violence because a
child who has been dealing with or witnessing domestic violence at a young age is more likely
to experience posttraumatic stress. Also, they can grow up thinking that being violent is a
good thing. However, someone who hasn’t or only witnessed 1 or 2 incidents may think
nothing of it.
2.
Identify and describe the effects of witnessing domestic violence on a child of 3, 10
and 13.
At age 3
- some of the effect that a child can experience is trouble sleeping, be fearful of the
abuser, cry a lot, or even demonstrate abuse with their toys.
At age 10
- some of the effects hat a child can experience is acting out in school and not
wanting to go, constantly having headaches, and being aggressive with other kids in the
classroom because they are anger or did not sleep well.
At age 13
- some of the effects hat a child can experience is depression or feeling alone, they
can start experimenting with drugs to ease the paint they are experiencing, and finally they
can be failing in school or not caring about their future in school.
3.
Identify and describe at least 3 ways that professionals/helpers can effectively
respond to child witnesses of domestic violence.
I believe professionals can effectively respond to child abuse witnesses by just being in the
child’s presence and show them that you care and speak positive to them. Another way can be
keeping them busy, which then distracts them from the pain they are feeling (even if it is
temporary), finally, avoid talking about what happened unless the child brings it up.
4.
What behaviors might parents expect to see in their children and what strategies
should parents employ to help manage these behaviors?
If a domestic violence situation occurred, you can expect your child to act out in many ways.
A few are, the child may be jumpy or scared, the child can shut down and not talk to anyone
because they are afraid something will happen to them, or they may continue to relive what
happened. There are things the parents can do to help, and they are, teach the child how to
relax and manage the fear they may have towards the person, allow them to speak to someone
(a counselor) in order to be able to open up and express their feelings, and reward them when
something good is happening, this can help take tier minds off the negative situations.
5.
List at least 2 resources (and/or resource agencies) that would be helpful to
professionals working with child witnesses. Describe the resources and/or
services provided by the resource agencies.
National Child Traumatic Stress Network
http://www.nctsn.org
and National Center for Children
Exposed to Violence
http://www.nccev.org
. Both of these resources mission is to provide help for
kids who have been traumatized in their household or community when it comes to domestic
violence. They provide treatment, interventions, and other trauma care.
