Yes, Marijuana should be legalized for recreational use. Outside of the health benefits that marijuana as
been proven to have, there are a lot of economical benefits to it as well. By legalizing marijuana
recreationally, it will help boost the economy by crating new tax revenues and by creating new jobs. It
would also take away the costs associated with maintaining marijuana use laws, essentially extinguishing
the costs of enforcing and preventing marijuana use. Every time some one is arrested for marijuana
possession, it cost money. On average, the U.S spends between $1.19 and $6.03 billion annually for
marijuana possession arrests (Hall, 2016). By legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, it essentially
extinguishes these costs altogether. In turn, by legalizing recreational marijuana, it decreases the illegal
marijuana market. Colorado currently uses the revenue made from legalized marijuana use to fund
community programs, such as public schools, police departments, and mental health programs. On top
of this, majority of Americans support the legalization of recreational marijuana. A 2022 Gallup poll
found 59% support for legalizing marijuana among American adults (Wilkinson, 2023).
