Clemmitt, M. (2007, February 9). Combating addiction.
CQ Researcher

In this article written by Marcia Clemmitt she explains the research she had found from
interviewing and readings about addiction. This article explains the brain function behind
addiction, and she as well debates the disease and choice topic. There is a sentence from
John T. Schwarzlose the president of the Betty Ford Center where he says “Once
someone is addicted . . . there is a change, an alteration, of the neurochemistry of the
brain. And you cannot go back once you've become addicted.” I think this perfectly
embodies that addiction is a disease. This article will also help to clarify the difference
between substance abuse and addiction. Marcia Clemmitt has a bachelor's degree in arts
and sciences from St. John’s College and a master’s degree in English from Georgetown
University. Most of her work was done being an editor for Medicine and Health out of
Washington. Her work is considered credible because of her long history in Medicine and
Health. Clemmitt has multiple volumes to follow with this article with all credible and
important

Friedman, J. (2014, May 2). Treating addiction.
CQ Researcher
,

, 385-408.

In this report informs the reader about the opioid epidemic and statistics in young adults.
Friedman also speaks about the genetics of addictions and how being predisposed to
certain chemicals like nicotine as a fetus can in fact put you at a disadvantage to being
addicted. She brings up different studies done by The American Society of Addiction
Medicine (ASAM) and The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). Having these
studies will help me to debate that addiction is a disease and more than a choice. Jane
Friedman is a writer/reporter out of Maryland and has her degree in political science from
the University of Pennsylvania. Friedman gets most of her knowledge from government
agencies and affiliations which makes her work credible and higher in my resources. She
does an excellent job of quoting and referencing all her information with practical links
and people to back up all her writings.
Rogeberg, O. (2020). The theory of Rational Addiction. Addiction, 115(1), 184–187
This article is written by Ole Rogeberg and he explains the Becker & Murphy rational
theory. This theory correlates addiction with choice which comes to behavior and
environmental patterns. This is my opposing argument, but Rogeberg brought up good
points in his writing and research. With his information we can look more into the
theories he brings up and see how well it correlates with addiction being proved a moral
choice. Ole Rogenberg has a PhD in economic research as well as a background in
addiction research. He is credible from being a senior researcher at Ragnar Frisch Centre
and attending the University of Oslo in Norway. He has reputable resources and scholarly
writings on different takes in addiction as well.
